PIE IN THE FACE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’ll tell you one thing that I love about writing these here notes on a Word document – I’ve been using the same damn piece of paper since November of 2001.  Do the math – can you imagine if I had written thousands of notes on actual paper, especially the SAME piece of paper?  No, all I have to do is delete the previous day’s notes and voila, a blank page on which to write my blather.  So, think of all the trees I’ve saved.  Think of all the ink I’ve saved.  I am, at this time, wondering what the HELL I’m talking about.

I needed to have a relaxing day yesterday and have it I did.  I got almost ten hours of blessed sleep, which I desperately needed.  Then I answered some e-mails and was just lazy up until the time I went to K’s Donuts to treat myself to one of their chocolate peanut butter donut things.  Unfortunately for me, apparently one person had been there earlier and bought every single one of them.  One of these fine days I’m going to find out who this person is and I will follow them and give them a proper lemon meringue pie in the face for their gluttonous behavior.  In fact, we haven’t had a good pie in the face sequence in years, have we?  I think it’s high time or, more aptly, low time to bring the pie in the face back.  And mark my words – now that I’ve written it in these here notes, one of our prying eyes will just “happen” to make that occur.  Mark my words, baby, mark my words.  And when it happens, I will follow that person and give him/her a proper lemon meringue pie in the face for not having an idea they can actually call their own.  Perhaps we will have a pie in the face number in the next Kritzerland show.

So, I settled for one of their chocolate with whipped cream donut things.  Before eating it, I stopped and had some lunch – a chili, cheese and onion omelet and an English muffin.  Then I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Death Occurred Last Night, one of those Eyetalian things from 1970 or thereabouts – not exactly a giallo and not exactly one of those Eyetalian crime things, but kind of a combo platter.  I quite liked it.  Raf Vallone, an actor I’ve always liked, is the star.  I did doze off after that, for about forty minutes.  Then I watched half of The Andromeda Strain on Blu and Ray from Germany.  This transfer has gotten high marks from the usual people who don’t seem to ever know what movies are actually supposed to look like.  In fact, it’s a big ol’ fail, color-wise, taken from an obviously fading internegative, with nothing being done to bring the color back to where it should be.

I ate my donut thing, and then watched the latest episode of Mad Men.  It was better than last week’s episode, but still had things that were, for me, time wasters.  I loathe the character of Lou and want him gone as soon as possible.  I always enjoy Peggy, and some of the Don story was good, leading to what I hope will be a rebirth of sorts so he can stop acting wussy in the agency.  We want him to stomp these people.

Then I did an event page for An Evening With Richard M. Sherman, which we’re doing as a LACCTAA event on May 30 at seven-thirty at LACC.  We really want a full house, so I “invited” a lot of folks, plus the LACC foundation is sending out an eBlast to over 12,000 people.  It takes forever to “invite” Facebook friends – there’s no “select all” button and it’s a real pain in the butt cheeks.  So, that took up most of the evening hours.

Today, I’ll hopefully arise feeling better and rested, then I have to be at LACC by one for the piano delivery and for my sound guy to check out the theater and recommend which mics we should use for the show.  Then I believe a friend who’s visiting from out of town will come by somewhere around three or four and she’ll watch our run-through.  I will have to find some time to eat something, but I discovered that there’s a nice place on campus called Tully’s – kind of like Starbuck’s but they also have good sandwiches and things.

Tomorrow, we have a band rehearsal, which I’ll only attend a portion of, and then our run-through, Wednesday is the sitzprobe and running as much as we can after it, Thursday is a run-through and Friday we begin tech.  I know there’s a paper tech in there somewhere, too.  Again, I’m trying to keep the tech for the show as simple as possible so we don’t get hung up with stuff I just don’t care about, like intricate light cues that, for me, are meaningless in a show called Li’l Abner.  Saturday we have a dress rehearsal, Sunday we’re off, and then it’s show week.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Ocarina, for today is the birthday of mostly errant and truant dear reader Sam.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to the mostly errant and truant dear reader Sam.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO THE MOSTLY ERRANT AND TRUANT DEAR READER SAM!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, meet with the sound guy, eat and have a run-through, our first time straight through without stops.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite movies of a slapstick nature – those with incredible bits of low physical comedy such as the pie in the face, which, of course, I am bringing back.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland after which someone is getting a pie in the face.
