THE DISAPPEARING SOUP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is the day before Thanksgiving.  And they say we never have up to the minute news here at haineshisway.com.  Damn them, damn them all to hell.  May I just say that the temporary cap came uncapped twice yesterday and believe me I was not chewing anything that should have dislodged it.  I’d talked to Dr. Chew’s assistant in the morning yesterday and she said to just be careful, but I’m thinking I’ll call again this morning because I really don’t want this to keep happening for the next week two weeks before I got the real deal.  Frankly, I’m worried I’ll swallow the damn thing.  Maybe he could make me a new one that’s slightly tighter.  Something has to be done because right now I can’t go anywhere near that cap with any kind of food at all.  What a revoltin’ predicament this is.  What am I, Chester A. Riley all of a sudden?

Other than that, yesterday was quite an okay day.  I got a bit over nine hours of blessed sleep.  I did kind of think it was today for most of yesterday, so I was constantly delighted to find it wasn’t today yesterday.  I did manage to eat a chili, cheese and onion omelet and some potatoes at noon, then I moseyed on over the hill and did an hour long interview with the very nice Les Traub for Cabaret Scenes magazine.  It was quite fun and he was very prepared with excellent questions.  Then I came back to the San Fernando Valley, picked up some mail and a couple of packages, bought a couple of bite-size cheesecake things and came home.  The first instance of the uncapped cap happened with the cheesecake and I wasn’t chewing anything hard on that side of my mouth.  In fact, I was chewing a little of the soft topping and out it popped.  Very annoying.  I got it back on and then stayed away from that side of my mouth.  I answered e-mails, did some work on the computer and printed out some orders, then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night I finished watching The Evil Eye aka The Girl Who Knew Too Much, the American AIP version.  I liked it better than the Eyetalian version although neither is what you’d call brilliant.  It’s well directed certainly and very atmospheric.  The Les Baxter score keeps things very light, unlike the Eyetalian, which is much more serious.  The initial cuts in the Eyetalian are all in the beginning and all involve comedy for the leading lady.  The score is somber and the editing is quite different.  It’s like two different movies really.  The transfers are not the same – the Eyetalian has kind of rough opening credits, then settles down, but is a bit dark.  The AIP is a bit lighter but for some silly reason they’ve left the reel change cue marks in (so simple to remove) and the splice sounds at the reel changes (also simple to remove, but apparently this company who prides themselves on how much work they put into transfers, put little into these).

I then went to Gelson’s and got a tiny bit of mac-and-cheese.  I actually wanted soup but soup has become scarce at Gelson’s.  Soup is suddenly the thing at Gelson’s.  Soup is what everyone must have.  Two months ago, you could find a full container of the soups any time of the day or evening.  Now they’re all empty by seven.  It would be amusing if it wasn’t irritating.  It’s like Gelson’s people, after six years, discovered soup.  Brilliant.  Anyway, I came home and the second instance of the uncapped cap occurred whilst eating the mac-and-cheese.  I mean, it’s pasta – soft – I just don’t get it.  This time I put the cap back where it belonged but it’s just really loose now – I’m not even sure it will stay in place when I brush my teeth before bed.  We shall see.

Then I watched the first forty minutes of the new Blu and Ray of The Picture of Dorian Gray.  I like the film very much and the transfer, while nothing to write home about, is at least very good.  I’ll finish it later today.  Then our Indiegogo campaign to fund our February production of Inside Out, the Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ musical that’s having its twentieth anniversary, went live.  Check out the page and the video and if you feel like it, donate a little something.  Be the first, start a trend.  Here is the link.

Today, I think I’ll call Dr. Chew in the morning and see if he can do something about the cap.  If not, I’ll just have to be very careful, especially on Thanksgiving.  I then have a one-hour work session for the holiday show, after which I’ll get something to eat.  I have some banking to do, and then hopefully I’ll pick up some packages and hopefully I’ll print out more orders, then I’m relaxing.

Tomorrow is, of course, Thanksgiving, a day for giving thanks, for turkey, for stuffing, for the berries of cran, for sweet potatoes, all chewed on the right side of my mouth for safety sake.  I’ll be going to the home of Barry Pearl and Cindy Dellinger and I’m sure it will be fun.  Friday I’m invited to another Do in Altadena and if I can figure out where that is and how to get there, I may stop by.  We shall see.  Other than that, I’m doin’ nothin’ until Monday next.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, call Dr. Chew, have a work session, eat, hopefully pick up packages, hopefully print out orders and then relax.
