August 12, 2015:

THE IRRITANTS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was just one of those days, just one of those moronic days in which everything irritated me from start to finish. I can’t think of a single thing yesterday that didn’t irritate me. Well, I got nine hours of sleep so that didn’t irritate me. But directly after that, all the irritants started, beginning with trying to set up a simple production meeting with my creative team. Well, simple is not possible with these folks, who are all very busy. Several possibilities were pitched to me and I made myself available for every one of them – then one by one suddenly they didn’t work for this person or that person – I finally had to write a strong note so we’re actually having two meetings – one on Sunday morning with the stage manager and costume designer, then another after rehearsal on Wednesday, around eight. It shouldn’t be this hard OR this irritating, but since irritating was the theme of the day, it was. After spending an hour dealing with that, I went to Jerry’s Deli where, for the second day in a row at noon all the booths that I like were taken. Talk about irritating. I mean noon is EMPTY, but suddenly it’s not for two days in a row. And then it will be empty again. So, that was irritating. I had a turkey sandwich – that wasn’t irritating, but the cole slaw was – just terrible. You never know what you’re gonna get in terms of the cole slaw – it’s either wretched or great with no in between.

Then I went to the mail place to pick up one package. They were crowded so I had to stand there and wait for five minutes to get my damn package and THAT was irritating. Then I came home to an e-mail that John Boswell’s printer is on the fritz and he took the files to Kinko’s where they wouldn’t print. Say what? So, suddenly I had to print out fourteen charts and my printer has been behaving poorly and that bit of business was beyond irritating and took over two damn hours. I was ready to give up and just put it all on a flash drive and go to Staples, but finally it all printed out. Screwy. And irritating as all get out and I think we all know how irritating all get out is. I did a jog, and then I had some irritating telephonic calls, answered irritating e-mails, and really took on some truly irritating idiots on a Facebook group. I didn’t even ask to be in this group, they put me in it. It’s one of the endless stream of groups from my high school and it’s just noxious, these people who apparently live on Facebook and post such scintillating topics such as Pastrami or Corned Beef? (The guy who did that post does one or two of those every day.) Or Who here remembers (fill in the blank)? And it’s always the same places over and over and over again. And this crap shows up when I go to Facebook and I just go there and have my say. Then, because all of the people in this particular group act as if they were still in high school, they begin behaving like fifteen-year-olds in cliques and become as obnoxious as they were then. I responded for a while, because it was fun to take them on, then I just left the group, although I’m still getting notifications, which I don’t quite understand, since I’m not in the damn group anymore. Note to idiots: It must be really fun to think your high school days were your glory days. But your drug days are long behind you (they do go on about it and brag about it, too), and so is your youth. One idiot said to me that talking about your youth keeps you young. I corrected her, telling her, no, a youthful spirit and outlook and doing what you love keeps one young, which is different than ACTING young, because there’s nothing more sickening than a sixty-something year old still acting like fifteen. And the worst of them, the real name callers are – wait for it – women. So, that was irritating until it wasn’t. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Cherry 2000, starring Melanie Griffith. I had never had any desire to see it but I got interested because it was directed by the guy who did Miracle Mile. His work on Cherry 2000 is fine, but the script is horrible and he cannot get around that. The film was shot in 1985. It was slated for release in August of 1986, shelved, slated for a 1987 release, shelved and then went directly to video. One wonders why Orion chose to make it in the first place. It does have some fun moments, and the Melanie Griffith of that period was very endearing. Whilst watching I made about four ounces of spaghetti, sautéed some onions in butter, dumped that on the spaghetti and added some Parmesan cheese and that was my evening snack.

Still irritated, I did a second jog and that was helpful. On every jog I do my opening patter from the commentary – I’ve got it pretty well down so can do it by heart, which I’ve done for the last three shows. Then I took a shower and I decided no more irritants. Done. Finito. I also e-mailed three more people about doing some work on the new musical revue.

Tomorrow, Sami and mom come at noon and we’ll go eat, then talk through stuff and maybe sing a little to get her back into working mode. How that session goes will dictate whether we’ll meet one more time before rehearsals begin next Monday. I’ll hopefully pick up packages, then I have a work session with John Boswell – that will probably take around ninety minutes, and then I relax.

The rest of the week and weekend is just me getting everything organized for our show – including meeting with our line producer, because all of the organizational stuff will be on her shoulders from here on in, as I just have to direct the show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, not be irritated ONCE during today and this evening, I must jog, I must have a lunch, I must have a work session, I must have another work session, and I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, putting my foot down that there will be no more irritants.
