ADVANCED CONFUSION

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, she of the Evil Eye came yesterday rather than today and therefore today feels like yesterday and yesterday felt like today, not necessarily in that order. That is what we call a time conundrum. I was most confused for most of yesterday, just as I’m already confused today and the day hasn’t even begun. I am confused in advance, which is better known as Advanced Confusion. This entire paragraph is confusing me.

Yesterday was a confusing day for the reasons stated above in the confusing paragraph. I was up at eight-thirty after only five hours of sleep. She of the Evil Eye arrived and I hit the road, Jack, and went and had some bacon, eggs, toast, and tomatoes. Once done, I came back home, answered e-mails, had a telephonic call and was very zonked due to only five hours of sleep.

I got the three redone mixes and approved two of them – the third still was missing some piano chords, so he fixed that and sent it right back and that was approved. And I heard and approved the one song that he hadn’t uploaded. Then I heard the Corey Fogelmanis bonus disc track and approved that. The mastering guy had everything by one o’clock. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Love and Mercy, the film about Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. I’d heard raves last year when it was on the festival circuit – the reviews were really good. I was a bit surprised that it then took the distributor eight months to actually release it. And when they did it was with so little fanfare in June that I didn’t even know it had escaped. It did not do well. Part of that, I think, is the title – while it makes sense and is the title of a song, it’s just confusing for the general public. But I think the other reason it didn’t do well is because the praise was perhaps a little over the top. For me, the film missed being great – I liked it a lot and enjoyed all of it, but there’s just something missing, either structurally or in the pacing. The story flips back and forth between the younger Brian and the older Brian. Paul Dano is absolutely astonishing as the younger Brian – he IS Brian Wilson and you believe it instantly. While John Cusack is very good, I didn’t lose myself in his Brian – plus he just mumbles too much. I would almost have liked to see them take the chance of having Paul Dano play Brian young and older. The leading lady (don’t remember her name – maybe Elizabeth Banks?) is very good, and so is Paul Giamatti as the horrible Eugene Landy. But that was part two of my problem – we come into that story and we never really know the beginning of it or enough about it. I actually wouldn’t have minded a bit more of that part of the film. Most of the direction is fine, but then the fellow can’t help but get artsy and I just don’t respond to that stuff. But overall, it’s quite good and I can definitely recommend it. One thing it does get right is life in the recording studio.

After that, it was time to mosey on over to the theater. We ran a couple of things, then just waited for our small audience to arrive. We had about a third of a house – second weeks are really tough. While it’s hard for an audience that size to really be vociferous, we got quite a few laughs and the songs all got really nice applause. After the show, some of us (including Sami and her mom) went to the Coral Café, where we all ate too damn much food. I had a BLTA wrap and we had nachos for the table. There were five of us, so I didn’t really eat all that many nachos, but then there were those pesky onion rings that came with the wrap. Then I came home.

Today, I will hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep. I’ll eat a chopped salad for lunch with red wine vinegar for the dressing, and no bagel, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and then I’ll watch Ten to Midnight for sure. Then we have our evening performance and we’re hoping for at least half a house.

Tomorrow we have a matinee and then we’ll go out for a nice dinner – perhaps the Smoke House again. Then I have to get the Kritzerland show music and get it to the singers. I still have about four songs to choose, and as of right now we don’t have any men or a musical director. Hopefully, the mastering guy will have the master to the pressing plant by Tuesday morning, and there’s a slim chance we’ll have them by the weekend, although more likely the following Monday or Tuesday, which means we’ll only have them in the theater for our final weekend. We also have to add one performance during our final two weekends – we’re trying to decide if that will happen on a Thursday or if we’ll add a Saturday matinee.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Mashed Potato, because today is the birthday of our very own beloved dear reader elmore. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own beloved dear reader elmore. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN BELOVED DEAR READER ELMORE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, have a salad and no bread, hopefully pick up packages, watch a movie and see our evening performance. Today’s topic of discussion: Who were your favorite all-male groups of the 1960s? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping to leave the state of Advanced Confusion behind.
