A DAY TO MYSELF, ALMOST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I needed a day to myself and I had a day to myself, almost. There were the usual intrusions like telephonic calls, e-mails, helper coming by, and a few other things. I did get eight hours of sleep. I did go and have some chicken tenders with no fries or onion rings. I didn’t go to the mail place, but I did come right back home. I added one new song to the Kritzerland show (which will be a surprise in terms of the performer who’s doing it), wrote that commentary, got our musical director all the music, hired a pianist for the musical theatre workshop I’ll be doing next week at LACC, but other than THOSE things, I had a day to myself, almost.

I was a little sad knowing our show is over. This show was very hard work and very rewarding on so many levels, and I just hate these things come to an end just as you’re really getting where you wanted to get. There was a little irritation with a troublemaker, but that all came and went quickly and will be taken care of faster than a speeding bullet. At some point, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Netflix entitled Reasonable Doubt, one of those “thrillers” sans thrills, this one incredibly bad, poorly directed, horribly written and the poor actors never have a chance with material as wretched as this. Shot at the end of 2012 and released a year and a half later – well, released may not be the word, since I can only find one reference to it playing in one theater – certainly there is no reported box-office for it – the title doesn’t even show up at Box Office Mojo. There is not one original moment in this thing – not a single moment you haven’t seen elsewhere a hundred times. But in this one the characters behave so stupidly for the entirety of the film, that it just boggles the mind that anyone read this and thought it was good. I’m sure the two lead actors got a nice paycheck, though. This is one of those things produced by a million companies, from Canada to Germany. Taking place in Chicago, the entire film was shot in Winnipeg. You get the idea. But here’s the topper: The film proper runs exactly eighty excruciating minutes. Well, they knew that wasn’t going to be acceptable to any distributor or anyone so what do they do – they do the slowest credit crawl in the history of film. I’m saying they stretch three minutes of end credits into eleven minutes of end credits – I am not making this up. At the end of most films, there are a plethora of union logos, all of which appear together in one big clump – not here. Here each logo gets its own interminable single card in the end scroll – each company, each producer (and there are about twenty) get their own slowwwwww moment on the screen. But we must also take into account the two minutes of logos at the start of the film – yes, every company gets its own logo, which is followed by text credits for each of those companies – so really, we’re talking a seventy-eight minute movie. I’m sure the budget wasn’t huge, and I’m sure they got lots of those Canadian tax breaks, but honestly, how can these conglomerates afford to lose every penny like this? It is, in a word, an enigma.

After that, since I’d only had five small chicken tenders, I decided to just eat nothing but junk for my snack, as I was in that kind of mode – I rarely do that anymore, so it was kind of amusing and fun. I had cheddar and sour cream potato chips (the really small bag, which is only an ounce), I had a same size bag of Funyons (kind of gross but fun), I had a couple of teeny-tiny half-ounce bags of those cheesy Goldfish things, I had Milk Duds, and that was about all the junk I could take. Then I relaxed and that was about it.

Today, I have some writing to do, then I’ll eat, hopefully pick up packages (the new Blu and Ray of Spartacus should be there – very exciting), and then I’ll relax until its time for the work session with the Kritzerland musical director, which happens at six-thirty.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, we’ll have our post mortem dinner with Sami and her mom, on Saturday I’m attending a wedding, and I really have to get a haircut soon.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, relax, and have a work session. Today’s topic of discussion: When you crave junk food snacks – chips, candy and other diversions – what are your favorites? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a day to myself, almost.
