October 13, 2015:

I CAUGHT THE DOUCHE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle doing a backflip whilst eating a frittata. Too many “t”s in frittata. And arbitrary T placement, too. What am I, the T police all of a sudden? Too Many “T”s – that’s the title of my next novel. Well, the big news is we are now on a new server at a new data center. The switchover actually was very swift. I’d been warned that we could be off-line up to thirty minutes, but in the end it was less than ninety seconds and back we were. I know our guy did a lot of research before moving us because neither of us want the problems, the incessant problems we had at the other jernt. He told me that these people respond instantly and suss things out very quickly, which all sounds good to me. So, here’s hoping our new server will serve us well.

Otherwise, yesterday was a day that moseyed along. Of course it was a holiday so I didn’t really have to do much. I didn’t fall asleep until four in the morning and so I slept till eleven-thirty and STILL didn’t get eight hours of sleep. Once up, I answered e-mails, worked at the piano, and then went and had a Chinese chicken salad at a Jewish deli. The surprising thing about Jerry’s Deli is that the Jew food is nowhere as good as the other food they serve – so I was surprised at how good the Chinese chicken salad was. Then I came back home, relaxed, and had to be very careful with my voice – just not sure what the HELL is going on because I am definitely not sick, but I’ve been getting hoarse easily and this is not the week I need that to be the case, so send some excellent vibes and xylophones for a strong and orotund voice for BK.

Then the evening rolled around (no mean feat) and it was time for part one of our first Kritzerland rehearsal – it’s a funky schedule this time due to the musical theater workshop I have to do on Thursday. First up was Shannon Warne – she hasn’t been with us for quite a while and it’s great to have her back. We ran her three numbers – first I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy, then a put-together of Love, Don’t Turn Away and Is It Really Me from 110 in the Shade. Finally, it was An English Teacher from Bye Bye Birdie, one of the oddest opening numbers in all of musical theater but one I absolutely love. After that, William Martinez arrived. He’s new to us, but I worked with him briefly when he was one of the vocalists on the demo I produced for my pal David Wechter. He’s really great and I already know we’ll have him back. First up was Once Upon a Time from All American. Then a put-together of You’ve Come Home and Tall Hope from Wildcat, and finally a put-together of Valse Milieu and Our Language of Love from Irma la Douce (I typed Douche but thankfully caught it – yes, I caught the Douche). I Caught the Douche – that’s the title of my next novel. Finally we had our mystery guest who signed in. The mystery guest ran his/her number and it’s going to be really fun.

After, I needed my evening snack and the question became to pancake or not to pancake. In the end it was to pancake and I went to Du-Par’s and had me a short stack and a side of bacon. All of it was really good. I didn’t finish the pancakes (I don’t know how anyone finishes a full order) but they really hit the spot. I had a cute gal in the next booth and she kept looking at me and chuckling over the comments we were both overhearing at the table nearby – two very strange women who were talking about guns and rifles – from what I could discern they liked guns and rifles. I also kept hearing lots of chatter about serials and contracts – film buff talk – and when I got up I saw there was an entire table of film buffs and historians, all of whom I knew. So, I said hi and we chatted for a bit and then I came home.

Today, we have part two of our first Kritzerland rehearsal. That begins at three-thirty and I’m probably not going to eat beforehand so I’ll grab a bite after – may have to have me another Jew Chinese chicken salad. I do have some errands and whatnot to do, and hopefully I’ll pick up one package. Then after rehearsal and food I’ll relax.

Tomorrow we have our second Kritzerland rehearsal, which takes up most of the afternoon. Thursday I teach the musical theater workshop at LACC, Friday I have to get a haircut, Saturday is our stumble-through at noon, and Sunday is sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have part two of the first Kritzerland rehearsal, I must eat, I must hopefully pick up a package and I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Jew deli dishes? And where have you had the best of them? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that I caught the Douche.
