FINDING THE COVER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I spent some fun time yesterday with our very own Grant Geissman, as he worked up a cover idea for the new book. While I like it (as does Muse Margaret) I’m not sure it’s saying the right thing. For me, it’s very important that the cover tells us exactly what the title means and what the book is about. This first cover attempt plays at a low-rent sci-fi horror poster but for me it looks a bit more like a pulp paperback cover and, again for me, it’s not selling what the book is about. I may have led Grant down the wrong path – I think his first thoughts were a little different. But in thinking about it a lot I came up with a couple of alternate ideas that I think might sell the title better, making it instantly apparent that it’s about a movie producer. So, I’m hoping we can get together and play with some ideas along those lines. Usually, I just go the way he wants because his instincts are really good, but I think this book is a little tricky.

Prior to that, I’d gotten about six or seven hours of sleep. Thank goodness bullets were dodged and no merde hit the fan, so please keep those strong excellent vibes and xylophones coming my way. Then I spent the two hours with Grant, then I went and had a cup of soup and a turkey sandwich with no fries or onion rings. I proofed one chapter whilst eating and relaxing. Then I came home, proofed another chapter, and then ran two little additions by Muse Margaret, both of which she liked, and then I entered all the recent fixes from proofing, so that I don’t have to do all of that when I’m finished.

At some point I went to Gelson’s and got a little prosciutto and melon balls for my snack. Once home, I hate to say it, but I just sat here and mostly did nothing. I can’t proof too much in one day or I just zone out and don’t catch things. I did catch up on e-mails, though, and did do some work on the computer, but it was pretty much a relaxing evening.

Today, I must be up early for she of the Evil Eye will be here bright and early and also early and bright. I’ll go proof and have a little nosh, then I’ll hopefully pick up packages, and then I have a little work session with Shelly Markham and Adryan Russ. After that, I’ll proof some more, then I have a birthday partay to attend. After that, I think Nick Redman and his ever-lovin’ Julie Kirgo and I may go out and chat.

Tomorrow will be a proofing day and relaxing day and hopefully a day with a miracle. Next week there’s a lot of stuff going on, including seeing the dress rehearsal of Grease Live.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, proof, nosh, hopefully pick up packages, proof, attend a birthday party and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: When you were growing up and going to the movies a lot, were there producers whose names you came to know and whose movies you knew you would want to see just because they were the producer? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we continue to try and find the cover.
