YES, WE HAVE NO BANANAS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and therefore I must write these notes in a hurry because if I don’t write them in a hurry I’ll start singing Oh, Lonesome Me or O Sole Mio or Ma, She’s Making Eyes at Me or Yes, We Have no Bananas or, best of all, all of the above at once. I used to sing only one of those songs regularly and it was Yes, We Have No Bananas. I like any song with bananas in it and I like any song that has both a yes and no in the title. I have no idea what the HELL I’m talking about, but whilst I gather my thoughts like errant pasta, let’s all sing a chorus of Yes, We Have No Bananas. On the count of three: One, two, three.

Yes, we have no bananas

We have no bananas today

We’ve string beans and onions

Cabbages and scallions

And all kinds of fruit, and say

That’s enough of that, but good job. That was so much fun perhaps we should all recite the tale of The Randy Vicar and the Six-Penny Nail. Perhaps not. Perhaps we should just have some damn notes is what we should have.

Yesterday was, I suppose, a day. I got up at nine-thirty and saw a day. I had a few telephonic conversations, answered e-mails, and then I went to Jerry’s Deli to deliver the book to one of the people who’ll blurb it. I sat for a few minutes and we gabbed, then I went to Grant Geissman’s to enter what we hoped will be the final fixes. It actually went pretty quickly. I asked for a slight style change on the chapter headings and he came up with a great one that didn’t require really doing much. Even while we were entering, we caught another couple of fixes. We got it all done in just over an hour. Then I went to Hugo’s and had some pasta papa and a small Caesar salad – haven’t been there in a while and it was excellent. Then I came home and had a meeting with a potential musical director for the LA show, and, based on our conversation, I hired him. Then our very own Nick Redman stopped by and we had a really fun two-hour visit, just gabbing about everything under the sun, including an upcoming Fox/Kritzerland project that is going to be spectacular. Then he left and I went to the computer, where Grant had sent me the final version of the book

So, once again, I went through it, with the copy that had my corrections at my side, just making sure we did all of them. There was one line where we fixed an indentation spacing problem and in doing so caused a bad break at the end of that line. Usually I am really looking to make sure that doesn’t happen, but that one got by me. And later, a restaurant spelling caught my eye, and just for grins I checked on it and I was wrong, so I corrected that. I got Grant those two tiny things, he’ll do them, and then the book is locked.

Then I did some other work on the computer, answered an e-mail from our editor, Marshall Harvey, about the two videos he’s working on, and had a small dish of low-fat low-cal ice cream. This is the first day in ages where I felt that I didn’t at all overeat. In fact, I think I had around 1200 calories, so that’s fine. Then I had a long telephonic conversation – as those who read the posts know, I’m not so happy with The Federal right now because for the fourth time in five months, they’ve bumped us from our regular night to another night. I haven’t worked this hard to make this show hugely successful only to have it undone by taking our key thing away – consistency. People have come back month in and month out because they know the when and where. That’s how I built this and I am not going to let anyone undo that. So, I’ve started to explore the possibility of moving the show elsewhere – we’ve survived two moves already and we’ll survive another if it comes to that. We shall see what we shall see and yes, we have no bananas.

Today I think I may just get to have a ME day – that would be a nice thing. I do have to finish casting, though, and do have to finish choosing the songs, which, of course, I can’t do until I finish casting. I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then relax.

Tomorrow and Sunday will be just organizing the Kritzerland show and making a show order. I also have a brief rehearsal with Sami and the musical director for the Robby Awards. I thought maybe I had something to see this week, but I guess not. Then Monday is the Robby Awards. I’ll help oversee things at sound check and then I’m looking forward to a fun evening. Sami’s performing Annie from Welcome to My World, too, so that will be fun.

Here’s an interesting factoid for you Leslie Parrish fans: Did you have any idea that it was she who came up with one of the most famous bumper sticker slogans in history, to wit: Suppose they gave a war and nobody came. The things you learn on the Internet.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a ME day, finish casting, finish choosing songs, eat, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – I have no idea. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall fall asleep to the lovelier than lovely strains of Yes, We Have No Bananas.
