THE MUSIC OF DANCE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and we have an early rehearsal tomorrow, so I must write these here notes in a hurry so I can get a semblance of beauty sleep. Yesterday’s rehearsal was good – for the hour I had everyone we ran things that they were in – they still have to catch up to everyone who’s been with us the whole time, and hopefully that will begin to happen soon. We did the opening, the second number, which needs a lot of work by two of the three ladies – they weren’t there when it was finished and despite the posted videos it was too rough to even bother with it – so that’s one we’ll be working on tomorrow and especially Saturday morning. At this point, depending on how tomorrow and Saturday go, I’m not at all certain we’ll be ready for running the show on Monday, as much as I want to. But I have the full cast for the entire rehearsal so four hours of drilling stuff over and over again may be what we need to do and we can do run-throughs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The opening number is in great shape. We ran the sketches with the folks who weren’t there to do them, and then we worked a lot on the end of act one. It’s actually in pretty good shape now – watching it, I know there are two or three more bits I’ll be adding to it. At the end of that, we brought in the department’s expert in physical stuff and she really enjoyed it and pronounced it very safe, so that’s good. We worked on the act one version of the male quartet number, sang through the big choral number in act two, I positioned the remaining three things that weren’t done, and then Cheryl arrived and we began working through the 60s dance number.

Lanny was with us and he’s creating the music for that. I’d already heard what he was working through and it was great. So, for ninety minutes we figured out exactly how it worked, what music began where and how it would build to a frenzy at the end, all of which happened and sounds great – really great.

Prior to that, I’d gotten only seven hours of sleep. Once up I didn’t have a lot of time to do anything – just answered a few e-mails and then had to pick Lanny up. We went to Bird’s. I had one chicken breast and a little side salad, plus I got us a small tower of onion rings. Lanny only had one, and I’m afraid I must admit to eating ALL the others. It was all very good. Then I had a production meeting. After that, the plan was to check out the two projectors were using for the projections – this has been a concern – these are brand new state-of-the-art things and no one really seems to know how they work and by that I mean the company that makes them. They tried to use them on a previous show and it as a no-go and since they weren’t really able to get them working yesterday, we’ll have normal projectors coming in on Monday and we’ll do our tests then. After rehearsal, I came directly home – I probably should have gotten a salad, but I didn’t, so I just ate some junk around here, like licorice and some little almond crisps or whatever they are.

Today, I must be up by eight and on the road by nine, just in case there’s traffic. We rehearse from ten to four with a thirty-minute break for food. I hope to really get everyone there secure in what they’re doing, but already one of our “shared” actors had a backpack stolen, so she’s dealing with that and won’t be with us until the afternoon. Nothing to be done about it, but obviously not ideal when I have them all so little. She’ll have to really catch up in the two hours I have her on Saturday. She’s really talented, though – we just need to get all the shared actors up to speed as quickly as possible. Cheryl isn’t with us, but the helper is, so hopefully we can continue cleaning everything up and just drilling stuff. After rehearsal, I’ll go eat something fun.

Tomorrow I’ll have to make the show order and write the commentary – I won’t have any time during the week to deal with that. Then next week is crazy crazy – the first Kritzerland rehearsal on Monday, ending at two-thirty and then I have to be at LACC by 3:15 at the latest. Then it’s more rehearsals, then the second Kritzerland rehearsal, which is going to cause me to miss that week’s production meeting, and then we have our stumble-through after an LA show rehearsal, and then it’s sound check and show. I have a really neat idea for the Kritzerland show and as soon as I lock it down I’ll let you all know what it is.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse for six hours, eat, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – I have no idea anymore. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that Lanny created some amazing dance music for our 60s dance sequence.
