TO BOLDLY GO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we got through the birthday concert, an evening of Star Trek music. This is the third one of these I’ve done – they’re kind of like mini-Kritzerland shows, although without our usual number of performers. I didn’t really know if I was going to be able to do it this year due to the scheduling of it the day after our big anniversary show, but the host agreed to keep it short and limit the number of selections to about nine. That made it a lot easier for me to write that patter. Richard Allen, our LA Now and Then musical director and musical director of the anniversary show was our pianist – he’s a HUGE Star Trek fan. Our singer was Maegan McConnell – a very talented performer who’s done all three of these. And we had the wonderful Sara Andon on flute (and pennywhistle). Unlike past years, the host introduction was short and sweet, and so we got right to the show promptly at seven. I welcomed everybody and the opening patter got really big laughs, so that was nice.

Everything went smoothly, and the patter laughs continued through the entire concert. It was a very large crowd and they seemed to really enjoy it all. Star Trek writer D.C. Fontana was there, too. I got out of there pretty quick afterwards as I hadn’t eaten all day.

I joined some friends at the Coral Café – we had chicken strips for the table – I ate three or four of them – very good, and I had a chicken Caesar wrap that was really terrible – it’s usually great. I ate it because I was hungry, but blechhh. I had a few onion rings with it. Then I came home. I began preparing for the new Indiegogo campaign we have to do to pay for the concert of The Brain – the costs are simple – the band and the sound package, so we’re not trying to raise all that much money – about $3,500 in all. I figured out the perks and as with the L.A. Now and Then campaign, I’ll add perks every day as we go into the final five days. I’m actually hoping we raise more than what we need because that extra dough will go right to the Theatre Academy at Los Angeles City College – I’ve been assured that whatever we raise will be used only for productions, with a considerable chunk held for the musical we’ll do next September.

Prior to all that, I got almost eight hours of sleep, I did some work on the computer, I did a two-and-a-half mile jog, and then moseyed on over to the house where the concert was taking place, did a sound check and then waited for the show to start.

I know I promised some video – here’s Anything You Can Do, with the few special lyric adjustments I wrote (sorry Irving) – I’m sure you’ll all know (knowing me as you do) what the gag is that made me want to do this number. I understand once people see that gag they will all steal it and claim it as their own, but you all saw it here first and you know who thought of it. And every time you see someone steal it, you must tell them they ought to credit the person who thought of it.

Isn’t that fun? Did you guess the gag? I’m sure you did, but in case you’re having a brain lapse, it was obviously the texting gag.

Today, I have a lot to do – mostly the Indiegogo campaign, which we want to have up by Thursday. I’ll also begin casting the October Kritzerland show and continue casting The Brain, I’ll eat, jog, hopefully pick up some packages, then I have a little production meeting at LACC for The Brain, and we’ll ship all those Amazon orders, and then relax.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals and going and doing and doing and going, plus seeing a couple of shows.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, create the Indiegogo campaign, cast, have a production meeting, eat, hopefully pick up packages, ship, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Are you a Trekkie or a fan of Star Trek? If so, what are your favorite episodes of the original series, your favorite movies in the series, and your favorite spinoffs of the TV show? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be done with the film music concert where I boldly went where no man has gone.
