THE LITTLE THIEVES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, in a perfect capper to this rather wacky year, the little thieves returned to ransack the motor car last night.  Since I was up until four in the morning, one does wonder when they do these things.  I’m pretty certain I locked the car, just as I was certain I locked it two years ago when what I believe were the same jerks did this – I believe they’re the same because they ransacked it in exactly the same way – no forced entry, they took all the loose change I keep for the parking meters – maybe they got a whopping six to ten bucks – they went through the glove box but since they stole the glasses that were in there last time, there was nothing for them to get – they left, for example, my supply of Covid masks.  They left it to me to put it all back in the glove box since they just left it on the floor.  Of course, they got the iPod, as they did last time, and that’s really irritating but such are the way of things.  I have a couple of tote bags in the back seat and they took those – I’m sure both were filled with trash and maybe whatever script I was directing when I was using them – why they would take those is anyone’s guess, but ASSES will be ASSES.  My simple Christmas wish to these ASSES is that karma pays them a visit – ideal karma would be for them to get robbed by someone or, barring that, that they suffer from some malady that makes them reassess their sorry lives, because they cause grief wherever they go, and they deserve it in return.  I’m thinking about setting up a camera out there and maybe then we could actually nail these mo-fos.  I was angry for most of the day over it, but finally let it go because why should I give these jerks the energy of anger or even a thought.  Thankfully, I have another iPod, so I synced that and will simply bring it in every night, which is a pain, but I’m done with these jerks.  And, of course, had they opened the trunk, which I actually don’t think they can do easily if they don’t have the key fob, they’d have gotten a wireless mic, two pieces of original art, and a box of CDs. So, I soothed my anger with music for most of the and evening, starting with an album of orchestral music by Jaromir Weinberger – there’s a great suite of music from Schwanda, Bohemian Songs and Dances (a wonderful piece), and an overture from The Beloved Voices.  But mostly I Weilled away the hours with Kurt Weill.  I’ve never given him his due but I am now. I listened to both his symphonies, his violin concerto, all of which I really enjoy.

Then I listened to the wonderful Columbia album of Lady in the Dark with Rise Stevens, Adolph Green, and John Reardon, conducted by Lehman Engel. I’ve owned the CD since it came out and never listened to it, I don’t think – well, this 1963 album is brilliant in performance and sound – I just adored it and will now listen to it many times over.  Then I went to Lost in the Stars, the original cast album on Decca – that’s a powerful little piece with some excellent music.  The mono sonics leave a lot to be desired and I’d like to hear it complete, so I’m looking at some of those recordings to see which I might like best.  I still have to find my Threepenny Opera cast album (the off-Broadway version) and some other Weill stuff that’s in one of the boxes.  And I also heard Der Jasager, which I’d played just before I went to bed, just prior to the little thieves doing their dirty business.

Yesterday was – well, I’ve already told you what yesterday was, haven’t I – but beyond that, I did get nine hours of sleep, I picked up one little package, I had two chili, cheese, and onion hot dogs and one with just mustard and onions – and those were good.  I also finished watching the Blu-ray of Die Vogel, the marvelous opera by Walter Braunfels in a not so wonderful production from the LA Opera, poorly directed, I thought, in a weirdly designed setting – well-sung, I suppose, and James Conlon is a fine conductor, so it sounds very good.  I’m sure that’s the only production it’s going to have for some time.  The music is wonderful, and I do love the Decca Entartete recording a lot.

After that, I had an egg sandwich on an onion roll for my evening snack, and otherwise it was syncing the iPod, which took about three hours, and listening to the wonderful music of Kurt Weill.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, although I dread going over there because the lines are outrageous and they don’t even scan stuff in and have it ready – so, I may go there at the end of the day, which is annoying but I can’t deal with the Amazon returns people and them not having anything sorted – we’ll see – I’ll eat, I’ll do some clarifications on project two, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, we have a Zoom session for project one.  I heard an orchestration yesterday and approved it, so there’s just one more and it’s pretty easy so hopefully I’ll have that by the time of the Zoom meeting.  The rest of the week is a holiday week – so, just picking up whatever needs picking up, making book notes, and that’s about it – otherwise, just catching up on watching and listening.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up packages at some point, eat, do some clarifications on project two, then watch, listen, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: Have you ever been robbed, whether home or car, did they catch the people, and what did you do subsequently to prevent that happening again? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping the little thieves get a lovely visit from karma central.
