HAPPY JEW YEAR

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to suites from the Janacek operas – lovely music conducted by Peter Breiner. Otherwise, I’ve been watching various and sundried YouTube videos, and I began watching some new motion picture via Amazon Prime entitled Annette, a purported musical by director Leon Carrax. I have never seen a film by Leon Carrax, but I’ve read about them, and he sounds like another filmmaker I wouldn’t care for – I’m sure he would have been much more at home in the 1970s, like Jodorowski and that band of outsiders. But this film is so divisive in terms of what I’m reading on Facebook and from critics – real, authentic loathing and real, authentic love and cries of “MASTERPIECE!” So, I watched the first twenty-two minutes. It opens in a recording studio that I recognized instantly as The Village on Santa Monica Boulevard and Butler Ave, because that’s where we recorded the vocals for the Roman Holiday Sherman Brothers album, as well as Kay Cole’s album, the cast album of Welcome to My World, and the cast album for A Carol Christmas. The songs are by something called Sparks. The two I heard were nothing to write home about. Then there’s a lengthy sequence onstage in a downtown theater, where Adam Driver seems to be playing a completely unfunny stand-up comic. This thing goes on forever with no real point – the audience sings some stuff, he prowls the stage in a bathrobe, has some awful dialogue, and then moons the audience. Meanwhile, Marion Cotillard seems to be playing an opera singer performing down the street at Disney Hall. That’s as far as I got. I suppose I’ll mush on at some point, but so far, so not to my liking. Other than that, I read act one of a script that I have to finish today, because I then have to read another script, and I also proofed the booklets of our two recent releases, so those go to the printer tomorrow. I must say, these wonderful Janacek opera suites are making me want to listen to all those operas again, which I might just do and I don’t care who knows it.

Yesterday wasn’t quite the ME day I thought it would be. I did get almost ten hours of sleep, so that was a very good thing. Once up, I answered some e-mails and puttered around the house, then decided on the quick and easy Taco Bell for food. I drove over there and went in. There was a fellow at the counter, no shirt and mask akimbo and nowhere hear his mouth. I looked at him for a second, then decided on what I was going to order, but this mental moron said to me, “What are you looking at?” I looked him in the eye and said, “Absolutely nothing.” I’m sure he didn’t get my meaning. I then made the split-second decision to bite my tongue and not say the rest of what was on my mind, because this moron was clearly out of his mind and perhaps even on drugs. I ordered my food and steered clear of him. He got his bag of whatever he’d ordered but didn’t leave. I could then see that the manager was not happy to have this moron in his store, and he finally said, “You have your order, please leave.” He did, but very slowly. I got my food and as I exited there he was. He said to me, “Got any change?” I replied, “You throw attitude at me and then ask me if I have any change? No, I don’t.” I walked away, got in my motor car and drove home.

Once home, I ate the fook and it was fine. The food was also fine but not quite as good as the fook. What the HELL am I talking about? I thought about watching a motion picture, but I just wasn’t really in the mood, so I puttered some more, relaxed, watch the YouTube videos. Then I went to Gelson’s and got a tiny bit of chopped liver and a piece of kugel so I could feel Jewish because yesterday night was the start of the Jewish New Year, so Happy Jew Year to all our wonderful Jewish dear readers, including my very own self. I came home and tried to eat the chopped liver, but it wasn’t as good as it usually is, so I just put it in the refrigerator. I had the kugel, which was excellent. I also had a tiny portion of fried rice – not too good. I’ve been having upset tummy issues, so I have to start eating one good meal a day and not the crap I’ve been eating. I may start going to Uncle Bernie’s deli more often, since it does have a Jerry’s vibe and I can get a nice turkey sandwich there.

Then I read the first act of the play, proofed, and that was the evening. After that, it was the Janacek opera suites, which are still ongoing and going on, not necessarily in that order.

Today, I’ll try to be up by eleven, I’ll do whatever needs doing and finish the first play I’m reading, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and envelopes, I’ll do some banking via the ATM, and then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal, which begins at two o’clock and should end around four or four-thirty, I think. Then I’ll go get some food somewhere. Once I get back home, then I’ll read the second play, and then I’ll be able to watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow I have a few things to do and do them I shall, Thursday is our second Kritzerland rehearsal, and we’ll be joined by our mystery guests – still trying to find one more – then Friday is some kind of meal thing, Saturday is our stumble-through, and Sunday we do our show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven, do whatever needs doing, finish the play, hopefully pick up some packages and envelopes, bank via the ATM, have our first Kritzerland rehearsal, eat, read the second play, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite ethnic foodstuffs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, wishing everyone of the Jewish persuasion the happiest Happy Jew Year.
