BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, last night it was back in the saddle time. I re-staged the L.A. Now and Then opening number and I’m happy to say the cast is quick as can be and even though we’re in a slightly different configuration in this theater, it really looks good – there’s something to be said for simplicity and clean, both of which this number has in spades. So, that was fun. And then our choreographer showed up and taught all the steps to the Hullabaloo number, which they also picked up quickly. So, now we return on Saturday for a long rehearsal day and by the end of it, all the numbers that have any kind of ography will be done. Although, that said, I’ve now found out at this late date that two of our gals cannot rehearse on any weekend prior to tech. Good luck with that. If I have to keep stopping the forward momentum because people need to learn numbers, I’m not sure how that works. I’m not sure when we’re supposed to do run-throughs if the weekends are out for two key people. I have two swings – neither of whom were there last night, so they’re behind two numbers now and only one of them is coming on Saturday. This is the maddening thing about doing theater here in Los Angeles. Not maddening for the people who miss rehearsals, but maddening for the actors who don’t, maddening for me, and just very difficult. I suppose we’ll soldier through it somehow, but I can see what we really have is a two-week rehearsal period with a cast not one of whom has done the show before. I just wrote two strong e-mails about it, not that anything’s gonna change. I understand completely that folks might have one or two minor things, but not like I’m seeing here. Ah, well, it will be what it will be, and if I don’t think we’re ready for our opening then we’ll deal with that when the time comes. End of minor rant, because it’s really a wonderful group of actors.

Yesterday was okay. I got seven hours of sleep, answered e-mails, had a telephonic conversation, deposited the Faculty residual, ordered the same thing I had yesterday – the chopped salad from Stanley’s – ate that, had another telephonic conversation, got all the tracks we needed for rehearsal onto the laptop, did some work on the computer then took a shower.

Then I stopped at the mail place to pick up a package, then went to rehearsal, which you already know about. After rehearsal, I stopped at Gelson’s and got some shredded chicken, onion roll, and some Milk Duds for a snack. I came home and had a chicken sandwich on an onion roll, and a few Milk Duds. Then it was time to write these here notes and listen to some Tony Bennett doing movie songs, including the Song from The Oscar (Maybe September).

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll eat something light, perhaps another salad, and then I’ll have a partial ME day and evening, when I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, we have a six-hour rehearsal, during which we should at least teach all the numbers that require choreography, although we’ll be without certain cast members. But it will be good to have all that done, and then it’s going to be up to others to put in the folks who’ve missed and if that requires an extra rehearsal, so be it. After rehearsal, I’ll just relax. Sunday can be a ME day, Monday I have a lot of stuff to do, and then we’re back in rehearsal on Tuesday, hopefully with the entire company so we can mush forward. I suppose while I’m working on some solo songs and scenes that our dance captain can take the folks who missed into the lobby and get them up to speed.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up packages, eat, and then at some point watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, who knows? Blu-ray, who knows? Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be back in the saddle again.
