March 18, 2022:

GETTING THERE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a run-through last night that miraculously ran the actual running time of the show – so, that was heartening. Act one played very well, with good, high energy and fun. Act two was a little sloppy so after we finished, I cleaned up stuff and did detail work on the show’s two major comedy sketches. While doing the detail work on the act one sketch, which David Wechter and I wrote, I made some small line adjustments that helped. But we’re starting to get there now and that’s a good thing. It’s not that easy rehearsing to rough music tracks, but they’re really good about doing it. And so, on we go. Prior to rehearsal, I had a fun meeting at the Coral Café about a project that could happen late in the year or early in 2023. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for at least seven years and now there’s a gentleman who was also thinking about it, so maybe we can bring it to fruition. Has anyone noticed that there’s fruit in fruition? Just asking. I had a B-L-T-A on white toast and some coleslaw – really quite good and really low calorie. And now, I am sitting here like so much fish, still going through the thirteen Felix Slatkin CDs. The stereo here is just incredible, really. There are a few mono things and even those sound great. It’s just a wonderful set and comes highly recommended by the likes of me.

Yesterday was weird and we can just now knock it off with the weird yesterdays. I didn’t get to sleep until five. Then I woke up at seven – allergies – and didn’t get back to sleep until nine. Then the alarm went off at one, but I fell back asleep for another hour. So, seven hours of sleep, I guess, but it sure didn’t feel like it. The helper came by and dropped some stuff off, then I answered e-mails and had some telephonic conversations. I did some work on the computer, then got ready for the meeting at the Coral Café. I really must start frequenting it more – I really like certain things there a lot – in addition to what I had yesterday, they do a very good chicken salad sandwich, a pretty good patty melt, wonderful breakfasts, including a very good Eggs Benedict. And their super deluxe nachos are really excellent. Like Art’s Deli, they do a tri-salad plate and theirs is excellent. It’s a huge menu, about eight pages. I got there at five and was surprised at how many people were there – of course, the median age of the people there was about ninety-two. I think I was one of the youngest people there. Then it was rehearsal, then a stop at Gelson’s, as I’d eaten less than five hundred calories. So, I got some bagels and some food for today, then came home and began listening to music.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll make a batch of Wacky Noodles – haven’t had those in quite a while, and I certainly haven’t made actual noodles, so that will be fun, perhaps even fun-and-a-half. A CD dealer’s coming by at two to pick up our new releases, and then I’ll try to do a little writing, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, we have our six-hour rehearsal and since I’m without two cast members, we’ll just all six hours to drill songs and sketches and such. Our choreographer will be with us and will do some cleaning up, and then I want to get her ideas of what to do during an instrumental break for one song in act one. I can’t remember if I shared our cast flyer, so here that is.

After rehearsal, I’ll eat something fun around there, and then I can relax. I thought Sunday was a ME day, but it is most assuredly not. I have to be up at nine and out the door by 9:45 to go sign at the paperback book show. I do that for an hour and then I’ll peruse the room and see what the dealers are hawking, then I can come home and have a partial ME day, which I need. Monday is an optional rehearsal for those who wish to come and basically work music with Richard Allen and I’m happy to work with anyone who’d like to work. I have the feeling that a few people will take advantage of it. Then we have full-on run-throughs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday – during the day on those days, sound will be set, projections will be set, and all the tech stuff will be attended to. On Friday, I’ll be there all day writing light cues with our lighting designer, then at seven we run through the show, and he does a light over, but no stopping. Saturday, we convene at three for a cue to cue, then we do a full tech run-through at seven. Sunday we’re off, and then we have a sitzbrobe on Monday night. Then an invited dress, two previews, and we open. Whew!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, have a CD dealer visit, write, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, Felix Slatkin, followed by Carmen Dragon, followed by the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble. Blu-ray, two cheesy 1950s sci-fi movies from the Shout Factory. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that the show has begun to get there.
