THE BOYS IN THE BAND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the boys in the band showed up last night and we had us a fine old sitzprobe of our show. That’s always a wonderful thing for the cast – to hear the band, sing with the band, and hear the orchestrations. You could just feel the energy in the room triple. There were almost no hiccups, playing-wise, from our new band members (three of the six played the show at LACC). They’re too loud now, but our sound designer will be fixing all that today prior to our final dress. Also, it was the first time hearing the orchestrations for the new songs, so that was really fun and they’re excellent. I think everyone left on quite the high. Here are some photographs of some of the cast and you can see the boys in the band in back.

After the sitzprobe, we ran a couple of things and then I sent everyone home. Of course, I’m still ever hopeful that we can finally have a day without some drama, but yesterday’s was one of my favorite people in the cast had a car accident. Thank heavens she’s fine – sore back, but she thinks it will be fine. So, please send some of your most excellent vibes and xylophones for her to be sans any pain tomorrow. After rehearsal, I stopped at Gelson’s and got some sushi (just avocado and rice), came home, and ate that – it was very good. Then I began listening – the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra doing a wonderful Charles Ives program – superb playing in amazing sound. And now playing – a Summer Evening program with music by Kodaly and Suk, which is also the name of my accountants.

Yesterday was pretty okay. I got nine hours of needed sleep. I’d finally gotten my 24-hour Claritin-D and I took one before bed and had no issues at all, a very pleasant change of pace. I had California Chicken Café for food – a chicken breast and wing and a small thing of chicken pasta salad. The breast and wing were not hot or even warm due to the delivery person making several stops prior to mine. From the time he left the restaurant, which is a seven-minute drive from here, it took him forty minutes to get to me. I complained to Door Dash, and they refunded the cost of the meal, which was very nice of them and the right thing to do.

I did some work on the computer, shaved, and then it was time to mosey on over to the theater. The sound guy was there and getting everything ready for the sitzprobe. We did get some good news about the budget of the show, so that was nice. Then we did the sitzprobe and the rest you know because you know the rest, which is what happens when you know the rest.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light but fun, then I’ll mosey on over to the mail place to see what’s what, and then I’ll get to the theater to work with the sound designer. The cast arrives at six so we can get them in their mics and do some tests with the hanging mics, then the band arrives, and he’ll get a nice mix of the singers and band. Then at eight we do our one and only dress/tech rehearsal. We’ll have projections for the first time, which I’m very nervous about, but hopefully they’ll work as they should. If not, someone has to figure them out because they MUST work for the preview. I’m sure if something’s rough, we’ll work whatever that is right after. Then I’ll come home.

Tomorrow is our first preview, Thursday is our second preview, and then we open our show. There’ll be a little opening night party afterwards. I’m really hoping we fill up the jernt.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat, go to the mail place, go to the theater, work on sound and projections, and then we do our dress/tech at eight. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite show orchestrations? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, energized by the boys in the band.
