March 3, 2022:

THE TURNTABLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’ve been transferring many LPs to digital thanks to a turntable that actually does that quite easily, directly onto a thumb drive with none of that pesky and hard to use software that most turntables use, ones that have to be hooked up to a computer. This was very inexpensive, and it works really well. It took me a few tries to get the counterweight balanced so that tracks wouldn’t arbitrarily skip – once I did that, then it was easy sailing. I had quite a few things to transfer but I refused to use the old USB turntable because I just hate the software. I have about ten albums total to do, and it will be lovely to be able to listen to them on the good Audioengine speakers. Earlier in the evening, we had a good rehearsal – our choreographer was with us, and we ran all her stuff, and she did another easy number, and that leaves her just one to do and it’s a solo dance in a solo number. The group numbers are looking very good. The opening number, which I staged, gets sharper and sharper as they run it. We begin each rehearsal with it. I assigned a couple of other things, so that was good – having to think outside the box due to this particular cast, which is so different than the LACC group. We also ran the two sketches and those will be fun.

Yesterday was certainly what you’d call a day. I know this because I was there and experienced it first hand. I got about six hours of sleep, I answered a few e-mails, and then I went the car dealer and got the navigation module – they installed it and then it took about five minutes for it to find it’s “towers” and load its maps and suddenly there was my car on the map. I have no idea how any of that works but I’ll play around with it today. I did watch a YouTube video and it seems easy, I just have to figure out how to get off the current map and onto the home page, so I can type in my home address so that it always knows where I’m returning to. Not sure if this unit does voice commands, but we’ll see.

After that, I went and did my banking – first to cash the usual check – in and out in two minutes – and then to deposit the cash. Thankfully, my branch has reopened and there was only one person ahead of me, so that went pretty quickly, too. Then I came home, ordered a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s, it arrived thirty minutes later, and I ate it all up and it was particularly good.

Then I did a recording test with the new turntable and that worked, then it was a Zoom with David Wechter – we went over the ending, and I’ll now have a go at writing it – he’s begun a new development reality show thing so it’s just easier for me to get it down, the bones of it, and then we can finesse whatever needs finessing.

After that, I moseyed on over to the theater and we had our three-hour rehearsal. Since I’d only had the salad for food, I stopped at Gelson’s on the way home and got a tiny quiche – kind of almost bite-sized – and some lobster salad. I came home and ate the teeny-tiny quiche thing, and it was pretty good, and then I had the three ounces of lobster salad and that was really good – it’s hit and miss, but this batch was definitely hit.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light and fun, I’ll do some writing, and then we have our rehearsal. The first hour, I’m working with Jeffrey Rockwell and Lisa Dyson on their big monologues and solos, just to get the moves down. The rest of the company shows up at eight and we’ll drill all the group numbers, then I’ll begin staging the solos – not much to do there, all pretty easy.

Tomorrow is off, so I’ll just relax and catch up on things, and then prepare our next two releases. I have six that are ready, so it’s just a scheduling thing now. Saturday, we have our long rehearsal from 10 to 3, but we’re missing quite a few people, so I’ll just run stuff with those who are there. The bad part is not being able to stage the wrestling match, as we’re missing one of those actors. I suppose this will all somehow sort itself out, but I want to be in run-throughs by next Friday, which is three days later than I’d wanted. Sunday is off, as is Monday and those will both be writing days.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat something light, do some writing, have a rehearsal, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Do you still have a turntable and, if so, how do you digitize your albums? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have a turntable that makes digitizing very easy.
