NO MEIN FEAT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Henry Mancini’s beautiful score to Me, Natalie, one of his most unknown scores and yet, for me, one of his best – beautiful themes, beautiful arrangments and orchestrations. It’s very addictive, which is more than I can say for the food at P.F. Chang’s. I will never understand this restaurant or why people love it and return constantly. I’ve eaten at a lot of different locations and the food has never been more than mediocre – flavorless, weird, and about as Chinese as the Pope is Jewish. There are several great Chinese restaurants, and yet this is what a lot of entitled wealthy people think is good Chinese. I don’t know why I keep trying, but last night’s meal was the worst and the last. How do you ruin won ton soup and yet they do it handily – the broth is just so weird-tasting and there’s an awful under taste to it. The won tons are fine, but the rest is just not for me. And last night, I also ordered what they call their signature lo mein, which I got with chicken. How do you ruin lo mein? That is no mein feat, let me tell you, but ruin lo mein they do. It has literally no flavor at all. I had to douse it in soy sauce to perk it up and that didn’t really help much. I ate it but I’m regretting that right now, or at least the tummy is. Prior to that, I began eight movies on Amazon Prime, all TV movies from the early 1970s. I’ll watch a couple of them, but it’s hilarious how they all look exactly the same, sound exactly the same, and have the same kinds of actors in them. And now, I am having a fruit pop of the lime flavor kind, just to try and wipe the taste of the soup and the signature lo mein out of me. Most of the evening hours were spent gathering materials for the next three or four CD releases. The lime fruit pop is very refreshing and hideous at the same time.

Yesterday was just a day, neither here nor there or even there nor here. I got six hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, saw that the hardcover had been delivered, got in the motor car and moseyed on over to the mail place and picked it up. It looks great. There is a slight weirdness, which is my fault for not catching it in the proof (neither did Doug Haverty, who designed it) – it’s understandable because the proof is laid out weirdly, so it doesn’t actually look wonky. I’m fine with it and it’s not worth adjusting. It’s not our fault and they’d have to fix it for free, but I’m not going to bother because it would be bothersome. I came right home and ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings from a nearby burger jernt called The Burger Den. It arrived quickly, and it was very good – meat is very high quality and all ingredients are very fresh. After that, I did some work on the computer, checked out what notes David Wechter has done so far and agree with most of the cuts he’s suggesting, some of which are substantial. All fat has to go and tell that to my stomach while you’re at it. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched the openings of eight TV movies, most of which are from producer Chuck Fries. But I was too antsy to watch anything all the way through and I also knew I’d nod off instantly. So, it was back to the computer and gathering the materials for our next three or four releases. Then came the low lo mein and soup and the blechhh feeling, and then the score to Me, Natalie and the lime fruit pop. Exciting, isn’t it? Oh, and I did watch some of the testimony today in the Depp/Heard trial. I must say again that his legal team is really good, while I find Heard’s legal team to be as annoying as it gets.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll start writing blurbs and preparing audio samples, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll eat, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is more of the same, Friday is our work session for the Kritzerland show and hopefully I’ll be able to announce our new titles, Sunday is our first Kritzerland rehearsal, Monday is a holiday, Tuesday is our second Kritzerland rehearsal, Thursday is our stumble-through and Friday is our show – oh, and somehow May is over, which is shocking.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, write blurbs and prepare audio samples, hopefully pick up packages, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I try get over this awful meal, especially the low lo mein, which is, as I said, no mein feat.
