62%! AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT HOLLYWOOD TRAFFIC HORROR SHOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, as is usually the case, the weekends are a bit slow, Indiegogo-wise, and certainly that proved true yesterday. We did have some early action and went up to 62%, so that was good, but then there was no further action for the entire day, but then in the later evening, someone took one of the out-of-print soundtracks, so that boosted us a bit more but didn’t change the percentage. So, let’s change that damn percentage, shall we. Here’s the handy-dandy link and I’m sure one of you lurkers would LOVE to get a nice, fun perk.

Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to more Erich Wolfgang Korngold – his stunning Theme and Variations – two versions back to back – the John Mauceri is far superior. The one on CPO has something seriously wrong with the sound and given that’s it’s a relatively new recording, I find that really odd. It sounds hideous. The other CPO discs seem okay, so maybe it was just that piece. Prior to that, I joined my friend Lanny Meyers at a hole-in-the-wall theater on “Theater Row” on Santa Monica Blvd. between Highland and Cahuenga – actually it’s really just a three-block thing. This was Lanny’s son’s one person show, being done at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Therefore, no real set, just a chair and some projections – at the Fringe, you have to clear out everything within twenty minutes so the next show can put their stuff in, which is why I would never do a Fringe show, after going through that very thing in New York for the NYMF festival where we did The Brain from Planet X. Anyway, Jonathan Meyers did a fine job with his one-hour monologue. It would be fun to see it in a proper theater where you could do proper lighting and sound and have it be a real piece of theater and theatricality. This was the final Fringe performance and then he’s off to Ireland to do it in August. Or I think it was Ireland. Might be Scotland. Might be Pacoima. What do I know?

Getting home was a nightmare of epic proportions and the police do nothing but stand there and let it all happen, even laughing about it. Because I was parked right at Cahuenga, I turned left there and drove up to Sunset. I could see it was completely blocked up ahead, north of Sunset, as in no cars were moving. I think that’s because there are quite a few clubs there and so it clogs up. I turned left and went a block over, to Wilcox – big mistake. It was worse. And baffling. They did have one line down in each direction for no discernable reason and then when you got to Selma, which took fifteen minutes to go that one block, the police were there but no one was moving. It didn’t help that this huge, supersize truck with smoke pouring out of it and a stage on the back where two idiots were doing some kind of performance of something, and the cops were doing nothing. I rolled down my window and asked them what the HELL was going on with this craziness and surprisingly neither had an answer. I said it was ridiculous that this could happen without anyone doing anything about it – they didn’t really give a flying Wallenda, so why they were even there is anyone’s guess.

Once I finally got past Hollywood Blvd. then it was fine and I got home ten minutes later. I’d had a burger and onion rings around three, so I was kind of hungry and I had a DoorDash credit from an accidental double order, one of which I cancelled, and they refunded that. Nothing really sounded good until Marco’s Pizza came up. I’ve wanted to try it before, but they don’t do slices and I didn’t want to take a chance. They’re in the same strip mall where K’s Donuts is. So, I ordered their Pepperoni Magnifico – a small and for a very reasonable $13.99. It arrived pretty quickly, about twenty minutes later and was thankfully still piping hot. I opened the box and the pizza was quite small, which is what I wanted. They also had some kind of sprinkled something on it – I was distrustful, of course, of any sprinkled stuff. But one bite and it was indeed magnifico, a great pizza pie. Small but perfectly filling and the sauce, while not quite the equal of Dino’s, was fantastic, and whatever the sprinkly spice was it was amazing, too. I’ll be back for sure.

Yesterday was a perfectly okay day. I was up at nine-thirty after about six hours of sleep, answered emails, saw that we’d gone up to 62%, then I moseyed on over to Marshall Harvey’s house and we finessed the Laura Wolfe sizzle reel for her club act. We were VERY limited in what we could do and use because all she had was the line edit done on the fly during the show and they were usually on the wrong angle every time you’d want to use something. We used some digital trickery and got its six-plus-minute runtime down to 3:30, which plays very well. I left and Marshall will now put some nice review quotes over a few sequences and that will be that.

I came right home, ordered a burger and onion rings from Fatburger, it arrived, and I ate it all up – not great, but it was certainly okay. I then sat on my couch like so much fish due to tiredness. I switched on the Firestick, I went to Amazon Prime and before I could even begin scrolling down, I was asleep. And stayed asleep for an hour. I couldn’t believe it, really. So, I then had to quickly shower and be on my way to the theater.

I got down there around 6:40 and found street parking nearby, right on Santa Monica Blvd. They have metered parking until 7:00, so I just took one of those and stayed in the car, listening to music and playing on the phone. At seven-forty, I went to the nearby theater and met up with Lanny and the rest you know.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do a little cheerleading but not much, as I’ll save that for during the week. I am hoping we go up another percent or two. I’ll call the mail place to see if there’s anything there for me – I haven’t checked in three days – if there is, I’ll go get it, if there’s not, I won’t. I may just have to have another of those Marco’s Pizza things, but if I don’t, I’ll for sure have one on Monday, but mostly I’ll have a ME day, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

This week is all cheerleading all the time, we begin our third Indiegogo week, I’ll do a lot of writing, do whatever needs doing, and put up new and fun perks.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, cheerlead, see if there’s any mail or packages, eat, have a ME day, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have gone up to 62% and not so happy to have been involved in the Saturday Night Hollywood Traffic Horror Show.
