FISH STORY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I wonder if my incessant nausea from everything I eat these days is just how it’s going to be. I’d hope not, but it’s just too weird. I would hate to think I’ll simply be limited to bland pudding from now on. I wasn’t made nauseous from the pappardelle the other day, so maybe I just have been having food luck. Today, I had food delivered from a Tarzana deli that’s supposed to be good, called Label’s Table. I got the sky-high pastrami and two latkes. The latter were excellent, and the pastrami was okay – not Langer’s – but better than Art’s. The nausea came on about three hours ago, which was about three or four hours after having the sandwich. I’m just very tired of this and would like it to abate ASAP. Other than that, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Manuel de Falla’s marvelous The Three-Cornered Hat, which isn’t the sequel to The Two-Cornered Hat. This is a wonderful performance by Ernest Ansermet, an SACD hybrid that sounds amazing. Tuneful as all get out and I think we all know just how tuneful all get out is. And I did manage to watch a motion picture, which was entitled Blue My Mind, a rather idiotic title to a Swiss film that could have been much more interesting than it is, thanks to a film student director (this was her thesis film). Her film suffers from everything a film student would shove into a film of her own writing. The story is slim but interesting as an idea – a fifteen-year-old girl coming of age, getting her first period, and suddenly her body and very being is changing – yes, full of metaphors, this film. You see, she’s turning into a fish – a mermaid, I suppose. It’s all very heavy-handed, and certainly not helped by making what is initially a character you think you’ll be able to empathize with, a character who wants to be with the cool, idiotic kids, wants to take after them and so we get drinking, drugs, indiscriminate sex, and vomiting. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, we get not one, not two, not three, but FOUR vomit scenes. Here’s the deal, young director thesis filmmaker – I will never watch another film you make because you have no taste and are disgusting. And isn’t it funny, there is not a jot of female nudity in this young woman’s film, and yet we get two totally pointless shots of male frontal nudity. Yes, we’re looking at you, young female director. So, any chance at having this be something beyond the crass thing it is, is blown early on, at least for me.

Yesterday was okay. I didn’t get to bed until five and got up at two, so eight hours, because I was up for an hour at some point. We had to replace Kerry O’Malley in the anniversary show because she got another TV gig – but thankfully that was a swift switch and we now have Ilene Graff, who hasn’t been with us for some time. Then I ordered lunch, it arrived and I ate it and now I am nauseous and then some. I did a few things that needed doing, then watched the movie. The four vomit scenes didn’t help my nausea. After that, I just relaxed and the rest  you know because you know the rest, not necessarily in that order.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something VERY mild and not heavy, I’ll continue choosing songs – making headway – and continue to organize the shipping of the perkilicious perks. At some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I have a lunch meeting with our line producer and a PR person and I’m looking forward to that. And then I’ll be continuing organizing she perk shipments and we’ll start at least getting out the easy stuff, like the CDs. Not sure what’s happening on the weekend but whatever it is I’m quite sure it will be happening.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat something VERY mild, continue choosing songs, hopefully pick up packages (more Pepcid has arrived), continue choosing songs, continue organizing perk shipments, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall hopefully not have a fish story dream.
