DECEIVED BY DECEIVED

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I was deceived. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, was deceived. Prior to going to bed and posting the notes, I’d found a movie on Amazon Prime that I had to pay $3.99 to stream, but since I enjoy cheesy 90s thrillers every now and then I did it – the title of the film in question was – Deceived, starring Miss Goldie Hawn and Mr. John Heard, along with Miss One-Scene Beatrice Straight. So, I’m watching this thing and watching this thing and it’s not really very good, but I like Miss Hawn so I’m watching this thing and I’m watching this thing. The plot has been done to death a zillion times, especially in 90s thrillers – see if you’ve heard this before – a woman in an idyllic marriage suddenly finds some things that lead her to believe her husband may be lying to her and may not be all he seems to be. Yeah, that one, plot number 10C. It’s going along and going along and not well, when there’s a scene with Goldie’s little daughter playing with her friend and they ask mommy if they can play with some jewelry and if the two gaudy things they’re chosen are okay for Halloween. Goldie, distracted, doesn’t even look over and just says yes. But we, the audience, knows that one of those gaudy things is a priceless antiquity that dear old dad, who’s since died in a horrible car crash, stole from the museum where he is a curator, substituting a fake version. At that very moment, I realize I’ve seen this damn thing before, so I search this here site and sure enough four years ago I saw it and wrote about how awful it was. And it was free back then. I’d written especially about the dumb ending – and I suffered through the rest of it and boy was it a dumb ending. I also mentioned the fake scare where Goldie thinks someone is in the house and as she goes to look in the bathroom a – wait for it – CAT jumps out, meowing as if it were a banshee in the night. Only problem is we’ve never seen this cat before in any of the house scenes. This is literally a cat out of the hat, in magician parlance. After that, we see it often – too late. Anyway, I felt deceived watching Deceived, deceived by my own inability to remember what I’ve seen and haven’t seen. So, from now on, when I come upon some lame thriller, prior to beginning it, especially if there’s a charge, I will search the title on our site and save myself the trouble of viewing something I’ve seen and hated. Now, I was originally going to open these here notes with a “I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon” screed, but I knew the deceived by Deceived story would take up the first page, so I’m saying it now and now that I’ve told the story, there’s not much else to tell.

Yesterday wasn’t bad – it wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad. I was up for ninety minutes at seven or so, but then slept until eleven, then twelve, and finally got up – I think I got a grand total of seven hours of sleep, which was fine. Once up, Grammy nominee Grant Geissman brought me a copy of the CD that’s nominated, and I will do what I can to help him win – I’m pretty smart about these things but he’s already done my first suggestion and hired a good publicist. After he left, I did a few things on the computer and then had to do the Zoom thing with David Wechter. Most of what we had to do was simple. In the middle of doing one of the two things that required some conversation, the computer did it’s every two-week freeze – absolutely infuriating – so, that was fifteen minutes wasted, after which we finished up and we’re now done with this draft.

By then, I was really hungry, so I ordered from the Japanese place from the other night – same thing – chicken teriyaki and a few bits of tempura. It arrived thirty minutes later and wasn’t quite as good as the other night, but it hit the spot and isn’t terrible, calorie-wise. But I also had a real hankering for a real dessert, so I searched desserts and up came this jernt I’ve been meaning to try called The Beignet Box over in the City of Studio. They had one thing with three beignets, so I got that. They’re really just small squares of fried dough with powdered sugar on top. Well, they were fantastic, and I’ll have to now have them every now and then. You do have to eat them while their warm, though. I could have eaten about nine more, frankly.

Then I had some telephonic conversations, did a few more things, and that was that. I then began watching a limited docuseries entitled Pepsi – Where’s My Jet? I knew nothing of this story and even though there’s too many actors recreating stuff to no purpose and one diversionary bit of mountain climbing, I’m enjoying it. Of course, it’s four episodes could have really been two and been fine.

Today, I’ll be up by eight-thirty and out the door before nine. I’ll go somewhere and have a light breakfast, pick up whatever’s at the mail place, maybe stop at Gelson’s and get some shrimp cocktail shrimp for a later snack (zero calories, basically) and just before I come back, I may have to stop at the Beignet Box for another three treats. We shall see. Then I’m just hanging out and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is more of that, then the short few days prior to Thanksgiving are really days off – not much to do at all. Then for Thanksgiving, Robert Yacko and I will have a meal out – already have that reservation, although it’s later in the evening.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eight-thirty and out the door before nine, I must have a light breakfast, hopefully pick up packages, perhaps get some shrimp from Gelson’s, perhaps get some beignets, and then do a few things and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Miss Goldie Hawn? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping I will have no repeats of the deceived by Deceived malarkey.
