THE BEDSHEETS ADVENTURE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we certainly had the adventure of the bedsheets yesterday. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, we certainly had the adventure of the bedsheets yesterday. It began with a trip to Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They’d moved the bedsheet sets from where they used to be, but I found them. I got someone to help me who couldn’t help me because – wait for it – they did not have a single set of bedsheets for a California King bed. Not one. None. Nada. Zip. They suggested they might be able to order a set, and have it delivered, so I was delivered to a new person who tried – out of stock on every single California King bedsheet set. But the lady told me a secret and the secret was that Bed, Bath, and Beyond has been not paying their vendors and so their vendors have not shipped anything to them. She was sad about it, since she loves working there. I left there, but before coming home to deal with the bedsheets adventure, I stopped at Jerry’s Deli, which is now some dessert place called Meltdown. It’s sad to see it – the inside completely gutted and looking cold and uninteresting. I’m sure the desserts are fine, but the finality of no more Jerry’s ever coming back is now a reality of finality. Some of us were hoping against hope that they’d magically return. After all, when they had a fire there, it was closed for almost five or six years, then suddenly re-opened. But not this time. I miss it a lot – going there, getting a favorite booth, having my various usual dishes, and having the various wait staff fawn over me and other regulars. Sad, sad, sad. But back to the adventure.

I got home, went to various online places but didn’t find much, so went to Amazon and found a set that seemed like a color I liked and good value for a really nice set. I bought it and it will arrive today. Then I did other stuff, which I’ll talk about in a little while. In the early evening, around six-thirty, I moseyed on over to the nearby mall and went to Macy’s. I went to the bedding department and they had a lot of bedsheet sets and many Cali-King sets, so that was good. They were also having a pre-Black Friday sale on almost everything, so I found a set I really liked – really high quality and more expensive than the set I got on Amazon, but with 50% off, it was too good a deal, so I bought those.

I came home and immediately washed them. I’d been told that the only way my sheets would have torn like they did is if they’re being washed and dried in hot water. So, I’ll let she of the Evil Eye know that in case she has been. I washed in cool water and dried in the cool temperature. Once that was done, I made the bed – the fitted sheet fit so much more easily than my old set did, that was a real treat. Everything fit better, in fact, and the color is perfect (a darker beige than I previously had), and they look really comfy. I’ll know more in about an hour. I can either keep the Amazon set as a back-up, which is probably a good idea, or return and get a credit. They make that very easy, thankfully.

Otherwise, it wasn’t such a bad day at all. I got eight hours of sleep – not straight through, was up for two hours from four-thirty to six-thirty – so that was good. Once up, I had lots of e-mails to answer. Then began the adventure. When I got home, I ordered a Subway pastrami and I think I inadvertently checked extra meat, which I didn’t want and/or need. It arrived about twenty minutes later and was pretty good – not enough mustard on it, so I added some. Too much meat, of course, but what was I to do but eat it, which I did.

At the mall, I did pick up a few pieces of See’s Candy – I mean, there I was, so the devil made me do it. Once the sheets were being washed, I had a couple of candies whilst getting singers their music. Then I tried to find something to watch – a bit of a Rock Hudson documentary I’d never seen, and some behind the scenes thing for The Facts of Life that was pretty boring. I’d forgotten that John Lawlor was in that show. We worked together on something – probably a commercial of some sort – a really nice guy and we got along famously.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, which includes writing two sets of liner notes, I’ll mosey on over to the mail place once I know the bedsheet package has arrived, I’ll eat, Kay Cole is coming by to pick something up, and then at some point I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, including setting the show order and writing the commentary – that part’s easy for this show, because we’ve done the majority of the material before, so I just cut and paste and then freshen it up a bit. It’s going to be a bittersweet show, our last before Vitello’s gets rid of the room as we know it. I’ve already made the deal for next year in terms of where we’ll be, so that was a big load off. Not sure how many shows we’ll do next year, but at least we have a place to do them and we’ll be back on Sundays, which is really good for us. There’ll be some meetings and meals, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, write two sets of liner notes, hopefully pick up packages, eat, have a brief visit with Kay Cole, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Mr. Rock Hudson? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had the bedsheet adventure and happy I have the new bedsheets ready for me on the bed.
