THE DROWSY PASTAMAN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much zombified fish, listening to Andre Previn’s album with Leontyne Price singing popular songs. It’s a wonderful album, with great Previn arrangements and great songs. I did try and watch a bad science fiction motion picture from 1960 entitled Beyond the Time Barrier – only seventy-four minutes, of which I probably saw five minutes due to continually dozing off, probably the result of eating too much damn spaghetti. Directed by cult movie director Edgar Ulmer, it’s a low-budget cheese fest I’ve seen on DVD prior to this. And yet, there are Ulmer lovers who defend this truly awful movie – Ulmer shot this and another film back-to-back – one week for each. And that’s exactly what it looks like. I forgot to write about a movie I saw a couple of nights ago entitled Burn, a really stupid and quite bad motion picture by a first-time director, but one I continued watching because I liked the lead actress, who I’d never heard of before, one Tilda Cobham-Hervey, playing a worker in a gas station convenience store. I think it wants to be a thriller/black comedy, but no, it’s not really either. Tilda Cobham-Hervey has done quite a few things, but I had no idea she’d played Helen Reddy in a recent biopic, so that’s now on my to watch list. I’ll also watch this remake of Dead Ringers, the David Cronenberg film that starred Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists. I’m fond of the Cronenberg and could not believe that anyone would have the chutzpah to do a remake, since it was a bomb. But someone did and changed the gender of the twins to female. I cannot see how that can work, given the the Cronenberg film and the novel it’s based on, Twins by Bari Wood. But it’s gotten pretty good reviews, although I think I’ve learned not to believe any of those.

Yesterday was another short day due to sleeping ten hours and not arising until one-thirty. Once up, I answered e-mails, did not got a galley/book covers to approve, so I wrote an e-mail to my lead guy there and asked if it should be taking this long, which it shouldn’t. Did some Sami stuff – today will be the last of the cast postings, and then we’re just a day away from the premiere. Very excited about that. Then I made the same meal I had the day before – spaghetti in red sauce with red onions. I thought I’d done half the package the first day, but I think I did less because this was a LOT of spaghetti. It was very good, but VERY filling. I was filled to brim with spaghetti and sauce. Uncomfortably so. Like really uncomfortably so. Like wanting to vomit on the ground so. After that, I just took it easy, did a few things that needed doing, and then I sat on my couch like so much fish, began watching the bad science fiction movie and fell asleep – I awoke sporadically, but always fell right back asleep, with some pretty weird dreams. And I must say that having weird dreams whilst watching a movie is very outre. Waking up, I was confused as to where I actually was. And that was pretty much it for the day and evening.

Today, I’ll be up by ten, I’ll shave and shower, I’ll do whatever needs doing, and then I have a one o’clock lunch that will require a twenty-five-minute drive. I’ve already figured out what I’ll have – well, it’s between two items – eggs Benedict or a Cobb Salad – I’m thinking the latter since I’ll be having an early breakfast tomorrow morning. But we’ll see how I’m feeling. I haven’t seen David Wechter since well before the pandemic, other than on Zoom, so it will be fun to have an in-person lunch. I’ll come right home and hopefully the traffic won’t be too crazy – if it is, I’ll probably get off the freeway and take regular streets home. I do have to make a Ralph’s run for some items for she of the Evil Eye. Once home, I’ll do Sami stuff and hopefully I’ll have an ETA on book stuff, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, she of the Evil Eye comes, so I’ll be up at eight-thirty and out of the house by nine, I’ll do stuff, but the majority of the day will be devoted to Sami stuff and getting ready for the premiere. As you know, I was thinking about doing a private screening of episode one with a Zoom Q&A after, but I think it’s too late to make that happen now. Maybe once people have seen the show we’ll do a Zoom with the cast. We shall see. Sunday is, of course, the premiere of Sami – I’ll post the direct links to the Amazon Prime page and I’m hoping that all dear readers will watch it and leave an Amazon review – that is of critical importance to our Amazon well-being. So, I’ll be following that all day and night. Next week, we’ll definitely have the book approved and then I’m not sure what else is happening.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten, shave and shower, do whatever needs doing, have a lunch, do a Ralph’s run, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, just going through the Previn RCA/Columbia box. Blu-ray, might watch the Cronenberg Dead Ringers. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, needing a little pasta break or I’ll be The Drowsy Pastaman.
