Well, dear readers, it’s always fun to discover a composer whose music you knew nothing of and such is the case with one Alfredo Casella, from far off Italy. Yes, an Eyetalian composer of classical music. For whatever reason, his second symphony was showing up on my Tube of You feed so a fed it and grabbed it and his other two symphonies, namely one and three. Apparently, he was a huge Mahler fan, and it shows in certain passages. The second symphony, which is just wrapping up, is really enjoyable – tuneful, accessible, and wonderfully orchestrated. Written in 1907, I believe. His first symphony is from the year before, and his third symphony is from much later, 1940. He died nine months before I, BK, was born in a trunk in the Princess Theater in Pocatello, Idaho. Oh, a Judy Garland reference. And now, it’s symphony one. Prior to listening, I tried to find something to watch and I almost did a BritBox free trial to watch the three Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple movies, but I didn’t do it. Nothing caught my eye and my eye, in retaliation, caught nothing. Not a very exciting Sunday evening, but why does every evening have to be exciting? Sometimes it’s just nice to putter around. Sometimes I putter whilst carrying a stick of butter but that’s only because I’m a nutter.
Yesterday was certainly a Sunday. I think I can say that without fear of contradiction. I had a horrible night of attempted sleep. The culprits were the damn donuts, which simply sat in my stomach like a lumpen bag of laundry and would not digest. So, it constantly felt like I might overflow and vomit on the ground. I didn’t, but I could not fall asleep and therefore kept getting up. I finally got three hours, which obviously was not a lot. Once up, I shaved and showered, answered e-mails, and then I attended a matinee of a play entitled The Laramie Project, which was all about The Laramie Project. I knew some stuff about the Matthew Shepard murder in Laramie, but I didn’t know any real details, which this play is filled with. I’m not sure what I thought of the actual play, which isn’t much of a play – it’s all based on conversations and interviews that were then turned into this play and not so gracefully. It’s a little coy about its style. It was also written in three acts, but they did it in two. The problem with that is that act one runs an hour and act two runs a bit over ninety minutes, which makes it seem endless. Cast did fine and I’m glad I saw it. Small audience, but Rob Stevens, our reviewer, was there, so I’ll look forward to his thoughts.
After the play, which, with intermission, was close to three hours, Doug Haverty and I went over to the Coral Café for a meal. I had the patty melt and a little side salad and Doug had his usual scrambled eggs and toast with jam. My patty melt was great and given the lousy food of Saturday, that was a good thing. After that, I decided to stop at the nearby Rite Aid and get some yummilicious cherry chip ice cream from the ice cream counter. I got two quarts of it – it’s pretty calorie friendly and I really do love it. I came home and had a nice helping of it and it was great. Then I answered e-mails and stuff, then sat on my couch like so much fish and watched – nothing. Then I grabbed the three symphonies and began listening. I’m quite enjoying the first symphony – very moody and good. Oh, and I made a little video message for a David Cassidy event today.
Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll check with the mail place to see what’s what, I’ll eat, and mostly we’ll be doing Sami stuff, posting new clips and such – mostly I need to catch up on the sleep I didn’t have yesterday.
The rest of the week is more of the same and we really need us a little miracle or there will be hell toupee.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, check with the mail place, eat, do Sami stuff and such, and then I can watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What was your favorite out of the blue composer discovery? And how did you find said composer? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have two count them two quarts of cherry-chip ice cream.
