Well, dear readers, even I, BK, sometimes go down a rabbit hole and that is why I’m starting these here notes very late. I don’t know why, but I searched a comic on the Tub of You – Mal Z. Lawrence – because the late Nick Redman and I saw him in Catskills on Broadway. We literally fell off our chairs and were laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe. So, it was fun to watch his routine again and I laughed just as hard now as I did then. I’m not a huge fan of stand-up comedy, especially now, but we had some great stand-up comics back in the day – Jack Benny, of course, Moms Mabley, Jackie Mason, Bob Newhart, Shelly Berman – I loved all those – and more. I was lucky enough to see Jackie Mason in person many times, as well as Shelly Berman. I only wish I’d seen Jack Benny. When I was a kid I was given a book by a relative who knew I was naturally funny – it was called Laughing Out Loud by Myron Cohen, and just was filled with his jokes. While I never thought he was that funny, I learned timing by just saying his jokes out loud. But here I am, out of the rabbit hole and ready to write some damn notes. I’m not even listening to music, but I did manage to watch a motion picture earlier, one I’d happily missed all these years – Child’s Play – not the film version of the Robert Morasco play, but the Chucky movie. First of all, this has always been called a slasher movie, which was pretty much the reason I stayed away. It’s hardly a slasher movie. Considering the cult of Chucky and considering it did well enough at the box-office (not huge, but well enough) to spawn and I do mean spawn seven sequels, a TV series AND a reboot, I was surprised at how bad much of it was. I’m not a fan of the director, although I do understand that people like his movies, especially Fright Night, the love of which I’ve never understood. The set-up is fun, if silly, but the dialogue is just so rancid, and also characters behave so stupidly, none more so than poor Chris Sarandon as a cop. The scares are all exactly the same – if you even want to call them scares – which part of the frame will Chucky suddenly appear out of nowhere from? That’s it. It does have a certain campy quality, but then it keeps going when it should end, for another ten minutes. But it’s an eighties movie and people who are of that generation LOVE every movie made in the eighties, including The Goonies. Anyway, glad I finally saw it and have no need to watch any of the sequels.
Yesterday was kind of an interesting if mostly uneventful day. I got about seven-and-a-half hours of sleep, got up at ten-thirty, which was good because the alarm on the iPad would not have gone off at eleven. Once up, I answered e-mails, had a brief visit that was a good thing, then I went and did some banking, came home, and about fifteen minutes later food arrived from Daughter’s Deli via Ubereats. They sent me a 40% off three orders thing, so that’s what I used. I ordered a sky-high pastrami – coleslaw and 1000-Island dressing on rye – this time I made sure to put LEAN in the special instructions place, and LEAN is what I got. The sandwich was amazingly amazing, and I got cucumber salad as my side and that was very good. It was filling and very satisfying, and the only other thing I ate after that was some cherry chip ice cream and that was great, too. We got a few sheet music orders, so that was good.
After that, not much happened, there were thankfully no annoyances, and then I watched the movie and went down a damn rabbit hole.
Today, I’ll be up by eleven and I loved my sandwich so much yesterday that I already ordered another for today using the second of the three 40% off things, I’ll do whatever needs doing, there’ll be some Sami stuff to attend to, I’ll check with the mail place to see if anything is there (I got notice that the hardcover is finally on its way), and then at some point I can watch, listen, and relax.
Tomorrow will be whatever it will be, Saturday is a casting session for the workshop, Saturday night I’m seeing a show, then Sunday is Mother’s Day and THIS mother will have a ME day.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven, do whatever needs doing, have the same sandwich again for food, check in with the mail place, do Sami stuff, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite sandwiches – to make at home – and especially to have whilst out? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, having had fun ruminating on classic stand-up.
