HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE IN THE DARK

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and I must write these here notes is a hurry, so let me start at the very beginning (a very good place to start) by wishing all you mothers out there in the dark a Happy Mother’s Day. I see all the Facebook posts of loving mothers and happy memories and I wish I could join in but those who’ve read the Kritzer trilogy know why I don’t. And we’ll just leave it at that. Last night, I did not watch a motion picture because I was seeing a production of Footloose out in See Me Valley, directed by friend Barry Pearl. It was a high energy show and it’s always enjoyable to see talented young ‘uns doing their thing. As you might imagine, the show is not to my liking – none of the shows cut from the same cloth are to my liking – this one uses several of the songs from the film, and none of the songs written especially for the musical are up to the film songs – the lazy lyrics by Dean Pitchford are especially annoying. It was paced well and thankfully didn’t overstay its welcome and the audience enjoyed it very much. Barry had several friends that I know there – Kenny Morse, Donald Petrie and a few others, so it was fun to see them. I did see the film of Footloose, and really didn’t care for it at all, despite some catchy music. I felt the same about Flashdance. Interestingly, both film and stage show got mediocre reviews – the film was a big hit despite that, and I was surprised to see that the musical ran 709 performances. I’d always assumed it had flopped – and financially it may have even with a two-year run. I stopped at Ralph’s on the way home and got some of those tiny pinwheel things and ate those, as I’d only had a sandwich earlier. They were good.

Yesterday was something or other. I got about six hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, shaved and showered, and then we had only two people at the casting session, neither of whom were right for the workshop we’re doing. So, we made a decision, moved the date by one week and will now make sure everyone can do it. On the way home, I stopped at Subway and got a pastrami sandwich. It was too fatty for me and not that good and I think they majorly gypped me on the amount of pastrami, which is fine seeing as it wasn’t great. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and finished watching a movie I’d started the night before – Jackie Chan in Rumble in the Bronx. It’s a really dumb movie filled with idiotic characters who make little sense, the bad guys turn around at the end and become good guys so that other bad guys who enter the film two-thirds of the way through can get theirs. Chan is terrific, though, and the stunts he does, several of which sent him to the hospital are occasionally breathtaking. The film seems completely surreal – it takes place in the Bronx but was filmed in Vancouver and you can clearly see the Vancouver mountains in several shots – I don’t believe the Bronx has mountain views. Then I did some stuff on the computer and then it was time to go to See Me Valley to see the show. It took thirty minutes to get there, but only twenty-two to come home.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll either make some pasta for food or order something in, depending on how I’m feeling, otherwise it’s a ME day and I’m not doing anything but watching, listening, and relaxing, not necessarily in that order.

This week is very busy. We have to get the flyer done for the Kritzerland show, which came together very quickly and is going to be very special for reasons you’ll understand when I tell you what it is. We have some but not all of the cast. The show happens on June 10, a Saturday night and we’ll be in a new venue to see if we like it and if it likes us. There’s a lot of Sami stuff to do, which you’ll understand when I tell you what’s going on, and I’ll place the book order so we can get the books and ship ‘em out. I haven’t decided whether the surprise gift that will come with it will come as a printout or via e-mail. I’d prefer the printout, but I have to make sure it will fit in the priority envelope in which the book will ship.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, either make some pasta or bring something in to eat, have a ME day, and watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, wishing all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day.
