June 30, 2023:

A MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY WHO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, these here notes will be written in a single take without any cuts or edits – one take, do you hear me? Now, why do I say that with such vim and verve? Well, I’ll tell you why. Because last evening I watched an Argentinian motion picture from Argentina on Amazon Prime entitled Causality, directed and co-written by Who. No, this is not an Abbott and Costello routine, that’s the credit – Who directed Causality? I’m surprised it wasn’t written by What and produced by I Don’t Know. Checking out Who’s other credits we find Who’s name is really Marcelo Politano, to which I say, “Who?” And you’d say, “Exactly.” In any case, this is Who’s third film and one of its trumpeted (by Who himself) selling points is that the entire close to two-hour movie is all one single take, to which I say, “What?” And you’d say, “Exactly.” I mean, they state that out loud before the end credits roll. Now, before I talk about Who’s movie, let’s break down this single take theory. In theory, the film should have taken exactly one-hour-and-fifty minutes to shoot. They couldn’t re-shoot anything if something went awry, so in order to do a take two or three, they’d have to do it all and they couldn’t use pieces of other takes in the final version. Now, of course this is nonsense. There are several shots in the film that go through a glass window, so as far as I know there is no camera that can perform that amazing feat, unless they CGI’d in a window within a door but then the door and the whole thing is just silly. There are multiple scenes in an elevator where the camera enters the elevator behind someone and whips around to the left, and I’m pretty certain there are invisible wipes in there and several other places, too, just like that war movie that was supposedly all shot in one take, even though you can clearly see the joined takes in that one. But for the sake of argument, let’s say I said, “I don’t know,” to which you’d say, “Exactly.” Let’s just say it is, which it isn’t. Does it make this motion picture more compelling than it already isn’t? No, it does not. So, let’s start with the fact that we really can’t judge the actors, although they appear to be terrible. But the only audio option for this film on Amazon Prime is an English dub, and THOSE voice actors really ARE terrible. Once you get past that, then there’s the plot, or in the case of this film, the plotz. It is so convoluted and there is so much cheating going on so that its endless “twists” can come fast and furious, and in the end, with the big reveal you realize that nothing that has come before it has made a lick of sense. I endured it not because it was a single take that wasn’t a single take, but to see how relentlessly idiotic it could be. And it really lived up to that idiotic moniker. So, I’d say, “Who is the responsible party for this mess, and you’d say, “Exactly.” Highly not recommended by the likes of Who? Me, that’s Who.

Prior to that, I watched a thing called Unspeakable. I say a thing because it’s not a movie, it runs forty-six minutes and I presume it ran in a one-hour time slot on the BBC. It’s about a woman who’s divorced her husband and is now living with a man considerably younger than she is – he lives with her and her two kids, an eleven-year-old daughter, and a younger son. All is happy-go-lucky until the woman gets a text from a number she doesn’t know, telling her that her young boyfriend may be doing inappropriate things with the young daughter, who is moody and untalkative. She gets more texts, tries to call the number, which goes right to voice mail. She confides in a friend and then finally confronts the boyfriend, who is very upset she told someone and worried the police will find out about the accusation. In the end, it’s something wholly opposite and fairly obvious from about the halfway point. I like the leading actress, Indira Varma, who I saw in something at some point, although none of her credits ring a bell, save for perhaps the mini-series Paranoid. Yes, it was Paranoid, which I watched and wrote about back in 2016. And now, it’s after midnight, so I must get on with the rest of these here notes.

Yesterday wasn’t much of anything. I got eight hours of sleep, had zero miracles and not even a single order, made penne with sauteed onions, butter, and cheese – made less than I usually do, two cups, which is four hundred calories according to the box. It was good and it was free. Even though there was a package at the mail place, I decided not to go. I had some telephonic calls, and then since I’d only eaten about seven hundred calories, I had a piece of cheesecake and I don’t care who knows it.

Before I get to tomorrow, can you believe this is the last day of June? Where the HELL did this month go? It flew by, like a gazelle being directed by Who, from a screenplay by What, and music by I Don’t Know. In any case, tomorrow is a brand new month called July, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that July will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. In any case, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll go to the mail place and pick up a little package and hopefully two important envelopes, I’ll do either a Ralph’s or Gelson’s run and get food from whichever place I choose, plus some Diet Coke. Then at some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up by eight-thirty and out the door by nine, I’ll have some breakfast, and then I’m thinking about going to the Hollywood Show to say hey to some folks I know who’ll be signing there. We shall see. Sunday, Who knows but Who’s not talking as he’s busy making a new film. Next week is VERY busy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, go to the mail place and pick up a package and hopefully two important envelopes, get food and Diet Coke, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD/DVD and Blu and Ray player or streaming device? I’ll start – Who the HELL knows but he’s busy directing a new movie. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, not that happy to have seen a motion picture directed by Who.
