Prince Harry Live! at Coachella reviewed by Rob Stevens

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has been in the news, tabloid and other, for most of the past year. There was the Oprah interview, the Netflix docuseries, his memoir The Spare, and his reluctant attendance at his father’s coronation. It makes sense that he would show up in at least one of this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival offerings. He does courtesy of Chris Chianesi who wrote, composed and performs the 50-minute concert Prince Harry Live! At Coachella at Studio/Stage.

Chianesi gives a full-out, high energy performance as the Prince turned Rock Star, strutting around the stage as musical royalty. He doesn’t resemble the real-life Windsor nor does he try too hard with his accent. He is there to deliver a fun time for his adoring groupies in the audience and, although none of the young ladies in attendance at the opening performance threw their keys or undergarments on stage, I think a few were thinking about doing just that. Chianesi’s music, heavily synthesized, started to sound all the same, but director Meg Buzza’s varied choreography kept him moving throughout. His lyrics had some bite as he detailed his royal entanglements in such songs as “Willy” and “Under the Bus”. This is precisely the kind of show Fringe was created for.
