The Consequences of Victoria Grey reviewed by Rob Stevens

Johnny Cassidy has adapted his young adult novel The Consequences of Victoria Grey into an hour-long musical at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. His “futuristic novel with unimaginable plot twists” had to be a really difficult task to translate to the stage while adding 11 songs with lyrics by Cassidy and music by Hahee Huh. I wasn’t the only member of the packed audience who seemed lost by what he was hearing and seeing. Sunfall, crax, the Lotus Temple and even the various amulets waved about weren’t clearly explained. This superhero tale of female empowerment needs a lot more work to succeed. The negligible songs don’t really add much to the story, just take time away from the storytelling and character development. The weak singing voices did not help matters. Avery Potermri’s direction provided no momentum, and her choreography was mostly marching front to back and back to front again except for one really painful ballet/modern dance near the end.
