THE HOME STRETCH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I think can safely say we’re in the home stretch on this thing I’m writing. I suspect there’s about forty pages left, maybe a bit more. All that will depend on keeping things moving along to the end, rather than taking a huge amount of time on things that would not carry us through. I made that mistake in There’s Mel, There’s Woody, and There’s You, writing the ending section over thirty-five pages too long. Thankfully, the Muse was strong about it and cutting those thirty-five pages was the best thing that could have happened. We didn’t lose any stories, we just took out all the unnecessary palaver. I guessing I’ll finish it this week. We shall see. The one thing I can definitely say to you is, novella my ASS. Otherwise, I did take a long break this evening because I could, but I didn’t really watch anything, just some irritating videos on YouTube, and then some news stuff, since there were such big doings last night.

Yesterday was yet another one of those days when I only got three-and-a-half hours of sleep. Too much ABS (Active Brain Syndrome) going on. I finally got to sleep at seven and the alarm went off at ten-thirty. Once up, I was greeted by a text I’d have preferred not to see and I think that’s only going to get worse. I answered e-mails and began futzing and finessing. I got about halfway through that but then I had to get ready for a lunch meeting.

Said lunch meeting took place at nearby Marmalade Café. I haven’t been there in over five years, although I did order food from there once during the pandemic. I had their really excellent mac-and-cheese (with bacon) – just great. The meeting was very productive and will result in some fun stuff – one or two CDs down the line and shows to accompany them. Something to look forward to. Lunch lasted about ninety minutes and then I came right home and finished futzing and finessing.

I then sent slightly over 100 pages to Muse Margaret, but she won’t get to read them until tomorrow – half in the morning and half in the afternoon. After I sent those off, I began writing new pages. I did about five right away, but then I began a section that was long so I just kept going until I got it done, after which I took the break, then kept on going from there and starting what will be the penultimate chapter. I ended up writing slightly over eighteen pages.

I did have a little frozen yogurt, vanilla, with some nuts and chocolate chips and whipped cream and that was pretty tasty.

Today, I’ll be up by ten-thirty at the latest, I’ll hopefully survive the morning, I’ll hope for a modern major miracle, which I desperately need, and then I’ll futz and finesse, write new pages, eat, go to the mail place to ship something, come home, write more new pages, and while I may take a couple of breaks, I’m really in the writing mode and will probably do at least fourteen pages. There will not be any watching or listening until I’m through with the book.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week will be more of the same until I’m finished. Then I’ll try to find someone who’ll go celebrate the finishing of the book. The weekend I’ll have to be at casting sessions for an evening of short plays, one of which I’ll be directing – it’s by Doug Haverty.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten-thirty at the latest, hopefully survive the morning, hope for a modern major miracle, futz and finesse, write new pages, eat, go to the mail place, come home, write more new pages, and then probably watch irritating YouTube videos. Today’s topic of discussion: Where have you had your favorite mac-and-cheese and why was it your favorite. And what mac-and-cheese do you like that you can prepare at home? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be in the home stretch.
