THE TALE OF THE SMASH BURGER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, another day and evening has passed and here I am, writing these here notes with not much to say due to every day of recent vintage basically being the same. That will change very soon, but until I get the second proofer’s stuff, this is what it is. So, I did try to watch an English motion picture from England on the Tube of You, entitled Jigsaw, a police procedural based on the novel called Sleep Long, My Love by Hillary Waugh. It’s directed by the very talented Val Guest and is in black-and-white scope. It’s very slow but I do enjoy this type of film. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t in the mood. So, let’s just talk about one of these “now” things that pop up and are popular with the populace for about twenty minutes, something called the smash burger. It was actually created sixty years ago, and there’s a chain of fast-food jernts called Smashburger, just not here in Los Angeles. But I gather its popularity here is just two or three years old. Everyone seems to be on the bandwagon, but it won’t last long, as these things never do. Anyway, last night I decided it was time to try one. Nearby Mel’s Diner has them or their variation of it, so I ordered one. It was pretty cheap because for whatever reason a five-dollar discount was applied. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great, it just was. Two smashed patties, pretty flat, cheese, lettuce, pickles and a secret sauce. The meat seemed very fresh and it was tasty. I didn’t love the sauce and would have preferred thousand island dressing, but I’m glad I tried it and I don’t think it’s anything I need to have again. Earlier, around noon, I had a Subway ham and turkey wrap. They’re less caloric than with bread and it was very good. Just over 400 calories for that sandwich.

Otherwise, I got about six hours of sleep, was up at eleven, answered e-mails, got one extra note from proofer one regarding a character name. About five times in this book, I changed my mind on first and last names for certain characters. I’d make the change but didn’t always catch every use of the original name. I should have done a global search and replace but I did not. Anyway, I fixed the one I’d missed. Then I had the wrap, did some organizing, had some telephonic conversations, and then talked to Muse Margaret about the twelve little things I had to run by her. We did about eight of them and the rest we preferred not to change.

Then I made the attempt to watch the movie, but only got about thirty minutes in before dozing off for a bit. Then I had another telephonic conversation, had the smash burger, and here we are.

Today, I’ll try to be up by eleven, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll check with the mail place to see if anything is there, I’ll hope for proofer two’s stuff, but I’m not sure that’ll come, I’ll do some work on the project with David Wechter, I’ll prep Doug’s ten-minute play and 70, Girls, 70, I’ll eat, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is that until the proofer two stuff arrives. Once that’s here, that’s an entire day’s works, I’m sure. I have some meetings and meals and we’re trying to set a rehearsal schedule for Doug’s play.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to be up by eleven, do whatever needs doing, check with the mail place, hope for proofer two’s stuff, do work on the project with David Wechter, prep Doug’s play and the musical, eat, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Have you ever had such a thing as a smash burger? If so, how did you like it? Otherwise, what are your favorite burgers? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have told the tale of the smashburger. Tomorrow, I will tell the tale of The Randy Vicar and the Duplicitous Dicky. .
