FOR A BRIEF MOMENT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, there was a brief moment in time when I opened the Word document into which I type these here notes where I thought to myself, myself, I wonder if anyone would notice if I just posted yesterday’s notes again today. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, there was a brief moment and then the moment passed and sanity returned to save the day, like Mighty Mouse. I used to love Mighty Mouse – “Here he comes to save the day! Mighty Mouse is on his way!” Speaking of Mighty Mouse, we had our third music rehearsal with many people MIA – some are in the one-acts at the Group Rep – they used to only do two shows a week for the upstairs show, but now they’ve added Thursdays, and this will continue to be an issue until they close, which isn’t until October 22. Another actor is in another show elsewhere that also plays Thursdays and THAT will continue until October 22. Another actor had a conflict and yet another was feeling under the weather. But the folks who were there did well and we now are putting a deal in place for any actors who miss a music and/or staging rehearsal – they must book time with our musical director to make up for what they miss so they’re not behind others or, for staging, they must book time with our assistant director so they can be put in because we cannot ever afford to take up valuable rehearsal time catching people up. Conflicts are the bane of any director’s existence in small theater where people aren’t being paid. L.A. Now and Then was horrifying in that regard – I’m not sure I ever had the complete cast until just before tech. That won’t happen here, thankfully, and a few of our actors don’t have any conflicts. Anyway, it is what it is and it’s always daunting when doing a show at a theater that has a lot going on. As it is, because the upstairs show plays Thursdays, they have to find a rehearsal space for us away from the theater. The show on the mainstage closes on the fifteenth and then that will open up Friday nights. It’s hard enough with plays (and every play goes through this, the nature of the beast) but with a musical it’s just a little nutty. We’ve now gone through the entire score, though. Oh dear, oh dear, it is very late and here I am in the damn first paragraph, flailing away. Where was I? Oh yes, third music rehearsal.

Yesterday was weird and a bit frustrating. I got up at eleven-thirty after seven-and-a-half hours of sleepy sleep. Once up, I answered e-mails, got all the hi-rez book files – cover, dust jacket flaps, back cover, and spine – so that’s all ready to go to the publisher on Monday. I finally did a little work on the project with David Wechter, so that was good. I had a nice Chinese chicken salad for food, watched a couple of irritating YouTube videos, then got ready for rehearsal and moseyed on over to Hollywood. On Tuesday, there was zero traffic at six-fifteen. Yesterday was insane and took twice as long to get there because some wag has deemed Thursdays to be the heaviest traffic days. Ridiculous.

After rehearsal, I stopped at Rite Aid and got some cherry chocolate chip ice cream and a bag of potato chips. Once home, I dumbed the potato chips into the salad bowl I used for the Chinese chicken salad, which I’d rinsed out six hours earlier. Unfortunately, it would never had occurred to me that the bowl hadn’t dried but it hadn’t and the potato chips were hopelessly soggy and I threw them out. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll do work on the project with David Wechter, I’ll begin prep for Tuesday’s first night of staging – I’m starting with the opening number. I’ll eat something fun and hopefully light, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, we have our final music rehearsal from eleven to two. Then I come home and wait for the Pearls to pick me up at five and they’ll drive us quite a distance to have food and see a show. Sunday might be a ME day – can’t remember.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, write, prep, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – no idea. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that the brief moment has passed and that I didn’t repost yesterday’s notes.
