A DAY OF YESTER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week has flown by, like a gazelle eating a turkey leg even though the turkey is still alive. That darn gazelle. Otherwise, we had a rehearsal with many missing people – two sick, four in shows and that is just too many people out. In any case, I had to put someone new in a number because the person in it was just not comfortable doing the staging and since the person is new to the cast, I had no choice but to do it. We came up with a solution and it will require a line or two to be added to make it make sense. So, we ran that number about five times, even though the person going into it wasn’t there, but we filmed it, and the person is very quick. While we were doing that, I had my assistant director block our new leading lady into the remainder of act one, so that’s done. After a short break, we began at the beginning of the show and slogged our way through the first three scenes – very slow going. I am having to be tougher than I care to be, but in the end it’s my job to whip this thing into shape and if that requires me not to be as much fun as I like to be, then so be it. I’ll be fun when everyone knows their stuff and I can actually DO my job, which is to direct the performances. It’s a little nutty. It’s a wonderful company and I have no doubt everyone will do wonderfully, but not at the pace we’re going and not with these kinds of absences. We’ll mush on and hope for the best. After rehearsal, I stopped at the nearby Rite-Aid and got some damn Milk Duds for a sweet. I ate a few, caught up on e-mails and here we are.

Yesterday was a day of yester. I did get almost ten hours of sleep, so that was really good. I answered e-mails, had telephonic calls, had Pad Thai for food – very good batch – then I just sat here trying to figure out how the HELL I’m going to survive this month, this show, this everything. Irritating texts, calls, e-mails – I need some damn respite, baby, throw me some damn respite already. I left at six and got home at ten-forty, only to find that we were barely on page five of postings. Um, no, just no.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll have a Zoom meeting with the costume designer and go over every character with him, but mostly I’ll relax until it’s time for our evening rehearsal. I’m hoping we have our full cast, perhaps minus the two sick people, although I’m hoping they’ll be back sooner than later.

Tomorrow is a day rehearsal but not on the stage, which is a huge problem, Sunday is also a day rehearsal but not on the stage, which is a HUGE problem. Monday we’re off, and then Tuesday we must get in shape for run-throughs and if we don’t have a full cast by then, we’re going to be in serious trouble.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, have a Zoom meeting, eat, relax, and then have our evening rehearsal. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – nothing. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping for a better today or, day of to.
