THE CULT OF DIFFI

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week has flown by, like a gazelle eating Turkish taffy in a Spanish garden under the apple tree. This has been quite the challenging week, and I can’t say it’s been a walk in the park or a ride to the beach. The irritating texts are relentless, trying to get through blocking this show is an endless challenge. Last night, we had our new leading lady who will do four of the six weeks of performances. So, I finished staging Boom Ditty Boom and I think it’s pretty clever. We blocked in our new actress into the opening number and Boom Ditty and we ran Hit It, Lorraine. After watching it, I made the decision to take our oldest actor out of it because it’s just too much moving for her. I figured out who could take her place and I think it’ll all work out fine. So, no new stuff got done and we’ll be back on Saturday, and I will keep slogging through act two – there are only a couple of longer scenes, not nearly as many songs, and I’ll try to at least rough out the rest of act two. I’m hoping things will get easier from here on in. I came right home, ordered a ham and turkey Subway sandwich for my evening meal, ate it, the bread wasn’t quite fresh but still edible, and caught up on e-mails and such.

Yesterday was like every day this past week. We found out our leading lady would not be returning to the show due to serious health issues. I had an irritating text, which I did not respond to, several telephonic calls trying to figure out which way to go in replacing the leading lady – the preference would have been not to split the role but we ran out of names. But our main gal who agreed to do it, said that if we found someone who could do the entire run she’d step aside. I had a patty melt and onion rings from Art’s Deli – terrible, all of it. I don’t know how they stay in business, frankly. Allergies abated somewhat, so that was good, but I’m still feeling a bit stuffed up and congested. This has really been a terrible last few weeks for allergies, and everyone here in L.A. has been complaining about it. I, personally, am tired of complaining. I just want things to be easier. At my age, we don’t need the aggravation of aggravating things. We need things to be easy and fun, we need not to worry every second of the day about aggravating things, we need merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. And we are in dire need of a modern major miracle or surviving any of this will become very difficult. And I, myself, don’t subscribe to the cult of diffi. I say banish the damn cult of diffi forever, trespass it and never let it come back or even forth. Doesn’t the cult of damn diffi know we’ve got a show to put on, writing to do, a written test to take at the DMV? I suppose there’s a kernel of a point somewhere, but I can no longer remember what it might have been.

Today, I have to be up by nine-thirty for an eleven o’clock early lunch meeting. After that, it’s a ME day although I have some prep work to do for Saturday’s rehearsal. If I need a snack in the evening I’ll get something light. At some point I hope to watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, we have a four-hour rehearsal and as mentioned I hope to at least rough out the rest of the show. Then I can come home and relax. Sunday and Monday we’re off. Tuesday we’re back and I’ll hopefully finish whatever we haven’t done, but mainly Cheryl Baxter is coming in to stage a tap number in a song. When that’s done, we go back to the top of the show and work our new actress into all the act one scenes as we assemble the show so we can begin run-throughs, hopefully sooner than later.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by nine-thirty, have an early lunch meeting, do some prep work, but mostly have a ME day and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – don’t ask me. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping we can forever banish the cult of diffi.
