TOPSY-TURVY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and therefore I must write these here notes in a hurry for to not do so would result in a world turned topsy-turvy or at least turvy-topsy. Although, let’s face it, the world IS topsy-turvy right now in the worst way. But enough about the world. We had another rehearsal, we began with act one and are now connecting the dots so that the actors understand how we get from scene to scene. I adjusted some blocking in one scene and that’s playing much better. We got halfway through the act, stopping and starting and we’ll get into act two tonight. The final hour of rehearsal was working with our other leading lady, and we got through half her scenes, and we’ll finish those tonight, too. We still have a couple of things to stage, and I’ll need to set time to do those. After rehearsal, I had to stop at the nearby CVS to get more Claritin-D and thankfully they had the 24-hour kind. I got some more Ricola drops, too. When I got home, I wrote our alternate leading lady a long e-mail about the character and how it works best. Then I had to catch up on quite a few e-mails and then I had a long telephonic conversation.

Yesterday was a little topsy-turvy. I did get ten hours of good sleep with even weirder dreams than the night before. Once up, I answered e-mails, had many telephonic conversations, had my grilled chicken pasta with broccoli, red onions, and cashews and it was great. More calls, more e-mails, and then it was time for me to be on my way to the theater. I stopped at the mail place, and this was waiting for me, my softcover test book. Hardcover will be here soon, and then I can order and a couple of weeks later we’ll ship them. I’m getting the special gift together now and it will come via e-mail. Then we had our rehearsal, and you know about that, as do I because I was there.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light but fun or at least something fun but light, then it’s another rehearsal – two hours for the leading lady who opens the show, and one hour for the other leading lady. We’ll continue connecting the dots and trying to get this thing to run like a machine. I have some actors who like to take too much time with lines so I’m trying to cement the concept that a show like this is like a relay race, with one actor handing the baton to another actor who has to take the baton with gusto and then pass it to the next actor, so that the energy and internal pacing never wanes. Because when it wanes it pours. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com.

Tomorrow, my hope is that we’ll finish the connecting the dots and that by Saturday we can do a rough run-through of the show. I’m also hoping that the cast is available to start an hour or two sooner, so we’ll canvas them tonight. Monday is our day off and I will really need it.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat, rehearse, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: In this topsy-turvy world, what things would you like to change the most? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping for a lot less topsy-turvy.
