November 1, 2023:

THE NOVEMBER MAN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have more breaking bombshell news for you and it’s big, it’s stupendous, it’s monumental, and it’s a game changer – it is November. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, because October has gone the way of the dodo bird, it is November and it is my fervent hope and prayer that November will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. Can you believe that 2023 is almost over? How did THAT happen? Last night was, of course, Halloween, but I wasn’t in the home environment, I was in rehearsal. Some folks brought some candy, so that was nice. I began the rehearsal by giving the cast the adjustments I’d made and that took thirty minutes. Then we began act two and I stopped and started so I could clean things up and we went through all but the final three scenes of the act. We stopped right at ten, Doug and I had a brief meeting with our leading lady and that went fine, and then I came right home, where I had a lot of e-mails that required responses and then the time got away from me and I got away from the time and here we are.

Yesterday was okay. I did get eight hours of sleep with some odd dreams – not bad, just odd – got up, answered e-mails, then shaved and showered and moseyed on over to the mail place, where I picked up two important envelopes, and then I went directly to the theater at three to meet with our costume designer. He showed me photos and costumes and they were all very nice and will work very well. That took about ninety minutes because I also had a long chat with our lighting designer, who was in hanging and focusing lights. I like him very much. At four-thirty, I moseyed on over to the Coral Café and ordered the patty melt and fries. It arrived, but one bite in revealed that my medium well burger was practically raw inside. My waitress looked at it, said yuck, and took it back. The second attempt was perfect, and I ate it all up and had about half the fries. Then I went back to the theater and the rest you know.

Today, I’ll be up by ten-thirty and then I’ll mosey on over to the bank and cash a check. Then I have to do a couple of errands, get some Diet Coke, fill up the motor car with gas, eat, relax, and then we have our seven to ten rehearsal. The plan is to finish act two, which should only take thirty minutes or so, and then go back to the top of act one and do detail work and clean up on the first two-thirds of the act. Then I’ll come home and relax.

Tomorrow, we’ll try a stumble-through of the entire show with as few stops as possible. That will give me at least a rough idea of where we are, time-wise. I want to get as close to my ideal goal as possible. That will take some doing. Friday, I’ll dry tech with the lighting guy, Friday night we’ll run the show sans stops and he’ll rough it with the lights. Saturday we have our sitzprobe at ten, then between one and two we’ll do a run-through, take a break, and then we’ll do another run, just to keep getting it smoother. Sunday, we’ll do two complete run-throughs, one of which will hopefully have costumes and sound. We’re off on Monday, Tuesday is our final dress/tech – I know they’d like to have a few people in, but I’m not sure we’ll be ready for that. Wednesday and Thursday are previews, and Friday we open this thing. Then I have to cram for my driver’s test the following Tuesday. I’m wishing I’d made the appointment a week later, but I couldn’t have known how crazy this show was going to be.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten-thirty, cash a check, do errands and whatnot, eat, relax, have a rehearsal, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we welcome November, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that November will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
