THE PENULTIMATE PERFORMANCE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, once again it is late and once again, I must write these notes in a hurry and once again I must once again say once again once again. So, last night, we played our second to last show. The audience last night was every bit as vocal and amazing as the night before. There were the usual sloppy bits, of course, and the leading lady’s mic was out for the entirety of act one. Turns out it was – unplugged. No one knows how it happened. Thankfully, with the exception of four things, she’s always near someone so she was picked up in their mic. We got it plugged in and it was fine for act two. Both acts played wonderfully, with tons of big laughs. I suggested a new bit of business for one of the actresses in act two’s big comic scene and holy moley on rye did it get a huge laugh. I hate to be a broken record, but it’s such a shame we can’t extend and play through January. In fact, every night people say that and yet – they won’t bend even though the show that follows us won’t make the kind of dough we’re making. Oh well. Well oh. And also remember, a broken record is correct twice a day. Oh wait, that’s a broken clock. I get confused at this time of night. Lots of nice compliments after the show and everyone felt very good about it, as they should.

Earlier, I was up at ten-thirty, answered e-mails, and then took the dog out for her constitutional. She peed in the yard and then wanted to go right back in the house. No way that was happening. I gave her a treat when she peed and she knew I had another, but she would not even think about pooping in the yard. So, we went out front, she nosed around my front lawn and kept wanting to go back in the house. I wasn’t going to give in. We walked next door; she nosed around that lawn and gave in and made an epic deposit as I knew she would. And then a moment later came some residual deposit and a minute after that, another epic deposit. For that she deserved the damn treat, and I knew she felt better. I cleaned up her stuff and took her back into the house and gave her her first meal. I ordered a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s with a 50% off coupon. That arrived and was excellent. Other than that, I basically just relaxed, then shaved and showered, and at ten after six left for the theater.

After hanging out for a bit, I left, stopped at Subway and got what in essence was a foot-long sandwich – two six-inchers, came home and ate that and both were very good. Dog didn’t want to go out and I didn’t feel like pushing it. I gave her two chances. I do believe she’ll be more than ready when I wake up in the morning.

Today, I’ll be up at ten-thirty, I’ll shave and shower, do a quick walk with the dog and hope she does her stuff, then I’ll stop somewhere and get something for the cast partay, then mosey on over to the theater for our last show. I’ll miss the audience reaction for sure and I know that I did everything I could within the chaos, to fix the show and given the reaction, I have to believe I succeeded. The cast really did pull through and I’m very proud of every one of them. Our band was terrific, as was the set and lighting, and our stage manager and sound guy also did great. After the little partay, I’ll head home, give the dog her second meal, and then probably finish Barbie.

Tomorrow, I’ll catch up on stuff, definitely decide on which book I’ll be doing and try to write a few pages of it, and Tuesday and Wednesday are the same and the dog departs on Wednesday evening, which is good because her food supply is done on Wednesday evening. Then it’s back to working on the project with David Wechter, getting ready for the Annual Kimmel Christmas Eve Do on Sunday, which means a big shopping on Friday night.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at ten-thirty, shave and shower, walk the dog, feed her her first meal, pick up something for the cast party, play our last show, have a cast party, come home and feed the dog meal two, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a great penultimate performance.
