A MIRACULOUS MIRACLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, first things first – we thankfully had us a modern major miracle yesterday, so that was great. Second things second, I did watch something last evening on MAX – Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays, mostly filmed live on Broadway. I didn’t even know they’d filmed it. I’m sure the show itself, being almost two hours, must have had an intermission, but maybe not. I first discovered Billy Crystal when he opened for Melissa Manchester at the Roxy, circa 1976. He was very funny, and I knew he was one to watch. I’ve always enjoyed him, whether in the movies or hosting the Oscars or whatever. Not everything he did worked, but his batting average was very high. 700 Sundays has tons of great laughs and bits, but also drama and moving stuff about his father and mother. It does go on just a bit too long, but I really enjoyed it and laughed out loud quite a few times. The original Broadway production was in 2004, but he brought it back in 2013 so it could be taped for HBO. If you have MAX and you like Crystal, then you might want to seek this out. Otherwise, I only got about six hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, did a quick bank run, got food from In ‘N’ Out, came home and ate it and then began futzing and finessing – very slow going, I must say, but I finally finished that, then got the news about the miraculous miracle. Then I wrote a few new pages, began watching 700 Sundays, then took a break for a snack of chicken soup and a cup of chili from Mel’s, both good, although I didn’t remember the chili being quite that spicy. I hope I don’t regret that later. Then I finished 700 Sundays, then wrote more new pages for a total of twelve, but I’m doing two more before bed just to finish the section I’m in. All in all, a pretty good day.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven or so, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll futz and finesse, write new pages, then I have a three o’clock lunch meeting with a writer to chat about his play. Once that’s done, I’ll come back home, write more pages, then I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same. Tomorrow night, I may go have a nice dinner, but mostly I’ll be writing, writing, and writing straight through the weekend.

I am having fun writing this new thing and writing non-fiction, for me at least, is scads easier than fiction, where I have a plot and characters to always deal with. With non-fiction, at least my non-fiction, I just write stuff and hopefully the form and style make it all work.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven or so, do whatever needs doing, futz and finesse, write new pages, have a lunch meeting, write more pages, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a miraculous miracle.
