ENTERING THE FIXES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry, for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and therefore I must be up very early. That, of course, reminds me of the tale of The Randy Vicar and the Crack of Dawn. I watched nothing but irritating YouTube videos last night. Oh, I guess I sped through a couple of movies, The Explosive Generation and Diary of a Teenage Wife, and I did watch a short film called Skaterdater, which was kind of fun. In fact, most of yesterday afternoon and evening was spent entering proofing fixes to the book. Proofer one found things I would never have found – missing letters, missing punctuation, missing words – but he also had some good ideas to have a sentence have more clarity. I don’t change those things until I’ve discussed with Muse Margaret, which I did. Even if we don’t agree, I always try to see what’s bothering someone and then I eventually come up with a slightly different solution and voila. By the end of the evening, I’d entered fixes for about 210 pages. I only discussed the first 100 with Muse Margaret because after that is when I entered the other 110 pages of changes. I guess at this point I can reveal the book. I had several options but I’m really glad I chose this one. And while I have touched upon a few things in this book in other books, this is really quite different in approach, plus anything post-2005 is all new material. It was both fun and frightening to think back on a few things, but this was absolutely the right book at the right time. The vibe of the book is mostly positive, but I cannot be anything but honest and so there may be a handful of people who won’t be so thrilled, if they even ever find out about it and read it, although there’s nothing really horrid about anyone. There were three things where I got nasty, I suppose, but that’s why I have Muse Margaret. I knew as I was writing those sections that she would want them gone and she’s absolutely right in her reasoning, but she also knew I had to write it that way to get it off my chest. Removing those sections took all of about two minutes. Anyway, we all love this cover Doug did – I mean, it’s just a photograph but out of all the fonts I asked to see, this one was instantly the right one for all of us, because it has a kind of sense of humor to it, or maybe a better way to describe it, a personality to it. Here it is.

I think that some will find some worth to it, and some may even want to try things that have always worked for me. It’s very detailed and I believe I talk about every show and film and cable thing I’ve directed. Even Nudie Musical in There’s Mel, There’s Woody, and There’s You is more about the production of the film and the aftermath, rather than the direction. Even after finishing it, I remembered a couple of things I did that I’d completely forgotten about. Anyway, I hope people like it. Also, yesterday I did the check cashing thing in the morning – in and out in four minutes, and then the deposit thing at my branch, which, for once, was totally empty. In and out in two minutes. I had the pasta I like at Stanley’s – that was excellent. And then the entering fixes began and the rest you know.

Today, I’ll be up at eight, I’ll be out of the house by eight-thirty and then I’ll find a smog check jernt and do that, so I can renew my registration and get my new tags. Then it’s back to entering fixes, I’ll eat something at some point, I’ll go over a few things with Muse Margaret, and my intention is to finish entering fixes by the end of the evening, because proofer two’s fixes will arrive on Wednesday. At some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of that, plus writing, plus meetings and meals and going and doing and doing and going.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at eight and out the door by eight-thirty, get a smog check, pick up some stuff at the mail place, come home, enter fixes, eat, call Muse Margaret, finish entering fixes, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite cartoons and shorts to watch when you were growing up? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, having fun entering the fixes.
