BY THE TIME I GET THESE NOTES UP, THE PHOENIX WILL BE RISING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can I write these here notes in one minute and get them posted in time? That is the question. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, that is the question. Forget that to be or not to be malarky – that isn’t the question, THIS is the question and the answer is a firm no because the minute is already up and it is 12:01 and therefore the question is to be or not to be up by 12:02 and the answer to THAT is a firm no because now it’s 12:02. First of all, is there such a thing as an infirm no? Only a firm no? No loose no? I gotta tell you, by the time I finish this paragraph, she’ll be rising – oh wait, she won’t be rising until I get to Phoenix and we all know the Phoenix is rising already. What the HELL am I talking about? What am I, Jimmy Webb all of a sudden? And now, it is 12:04 and I’m not even halfway through the damn first paragraph, nor am I halfway to Phoenix so she may as well stay in bed. The reason for the lateness in writing these here notes is simple – I was sitting on the couch like so much fish, watching Jack Benny’s twenty year anniversary special. As soon as the credits began rolling, I fell asleep. I woke up to Dionne Warwick singing I Got Love from Purlie on some TV show. I bolted upright, which is the only way someone of my years can bolt, and began to sing I Got Notes, turned off the TV and hied myself over to the computer. Now, prior to that, I’d had a lovelier than lovely dinner at the Smoke House with Richard Allen. I hadn’t seen him in quite some time so it was fun to catch up. I ate a few too many pieces of the garlic cheese bread – not at the restaurant, but later, at home, and now I reek of garlic and lateness, not necessarily in that order. For food, I had a cup of clam chowder (a bit on the thin side last night – not me, the soup), and then fish and chips, which I hadn’t had in ages. It was great, as always, but the three pieces of fish were very small, like three bites and done. Fries were good and they do have the best tartar sauce anywhere. After that, I came right home and a bit later ate the four remaining pieces of garlic cheese bread.

Prior to that, I’d gotten seven and a half hours of sleep, got up, answered a few e-mails, relaxed, shaved and showered, watched some videos on the Tube of You, and then moseyed on over to the Smoke House and the rest you know and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll do some writing, I’ll eat something fun (I have food for the entire week, actually), then I have a Zoom with David Wechter, after which, I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same – writing, eating, attending an opening night, and doing whatever needs doing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, write, eat, have a Zoom thing, and watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Jimmy Webb songs? I’ll start – there aren’t too many that I don’t love, but I especially love the entirety of the Richard Harris album, A Tramp Shining, which has Didn’t We?, MacArthur Park and other great songs, and of course, I love Wichita Lineman and By the Time I Get to Phoenix and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and lots of others. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, and by the time I get these here notes up at 12.22 she’ll be rising whilst I’ll be in dreamland.
