FOR THE LOVE OF A GOOD CHILI DOG

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much exasperated fish STILL listening to the Bach Mass in B-minor – whole mess o’ Mass. I think there’s ten minutes left, so perhaps by the time I finish these here notes we’ll have moved on to Mr. Wagner and orchestral excerpts from his various and sundried operas. I just had a bit of low-fat cottage cheese as a little snack. The hardest thing about dieting at this point is after all that late-night food binging during the pandemic and continuing since, I have to untrain myself from eating anything harmful late at night or anything at all but a small snack after six. So far, so good on that front. I did watch another documentary last night, this one on Max, entitled Quiet on Set, about the dark side of children’s television, specifically Nickelodeon. I will admit to never having watched any of that stuff and seeing many scenes during the four episodes of this documentary, I’m sure glad I didn’t have a kid growing up during the 90s. The creator/producer responsible for most of it is a man named Dan Schneider. Watching some of the things he thought were appropriate for kids to do, which they are clearly not, is appalling. I mean, truly appalling because they’re so blatantly sexual. But the real crux of the story were the two main people working on these shows, one of whom was arrested and convicted for child pornography and inappropriate things on the set, the other who was arrested and convicted for sexual abuse of a teen actor who’d been on several Nickelodeon shows. That is the most harrowing story and the person involved is very brave to finally tell his story. Of course, because our justice system is so broken, the culprit only ended up being convicted of two charges (he did horrible things to this teen) and serving only sixteen months in jail. Apparently, there were many letters of support for this horrible person written by a lot of well-known people who were given much misinformation – as one of them said, she would never have written the letter if she hadn’t been lied to. Of course, the Nickelodeon response is a boiler plate “we take all allegations seriously” blah, blah, blah, and Dan Scheider, who created a pretty toxic workplace, while not interviewed, sent responses, basically denying everything, although finally saying some of his behavior was inappropriate and he apologizes to anyone who was hurt by it. Apparently, the reaction to the documentary was such that there’s a wrap-up episode airing this Sunday, which I’ll definitely watch. The only thing I could live without are the two women who had nothing to do with anything – one a “culture” write, the other a writer for Business Insider. Anyway, well worth your time and the four episodes run about three hours. As someone who’s been working with kids for quite some time, this stuff really frosts me.

Otherwise, yesterday was what it was. I got eight and a half hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, then the hot dog buns I had weren’t fresh anymore, so I ordered some fresh buns (and can’t we all use some fresh buns), along with another package of Nathan’s hot dogs, a can of Dennison’s chili with no beans, some low-fat cottage cheese, some more strawberries, some cut pineapple, and a couple of other items. Once they arrived, I made three count them three hot dogs – two with mustard and onions, one with chili, cheese and onions. I liked the Dennison chili much better than the Hormel brand. All three were excellent and the calorie-count was about 850 for the three. For a sweet treat, I had the strawberries, a few blueberries, and a few raspberries with a schpritz of whipped cream – very good. At six, I had a 90-calorie tapioca pudding cup, and the low-fat cottage cheese you know about. And now, thankfully, Mr. Wagner’s music is playing, with Eugene Ormandy and the mighty Philadelphians doing a bang-up job of it.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do a quick run to the ATM, I’ll probably do more hot dogs, perhaps two chili, cheese, and onion dogs this time. I do love a good chili dog and a good chili dog does love me in return. Haven’t heard from the Darling Daughter so am assuming she’ll be here on Sunday and I’m very much looking forward to that visit. At some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, if the Darling Daughter is here, we’ll visit and hopefully go out for a meal somewhere – I’ll have to be a good boy, so somewhere where I can get a salad of some sort or something within my calorie range. Then this week will be pretty much a horror show unless we get the miracle of a modern major miracle. We shall pray, oh, yes, we shall pray.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do a quick ATM run, I’ll eat, I’ll do whatever needs doing and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion. Your favorite kid shows growing up, and have you ever seen any of the 90s/early 2000s Nickelodeon shows? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream of loving a good chili dog.
