THE NEW GLASSES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the call woke me up. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, the call woke me up – the call from the glasses place that my new glasses were ready. I told her I’d be there by noon. Unfortunately, I hadn’t looked at the time – it was 11:40. I got it together pretty quickly and actually got there by noon-fifteen. I was very excited to try them on. Well, it was weird. She had me look at the door, which was a bit away from the counter. It still looked like my right side was tilted. She had me take them off and put them on again. Certainly, everything was in focus, so that was good. She had me tilt my head up, which made it worse, then tilt my head down, which corrected the problem, and it was basically fine. Obviously, I don’t want to walk around with my head tilted down, but she said to wear them and let my eyeballs get used to them, then I’ll come back on Monday at noon, and we’ll go from there. She said it’s an easy adjustment if I’m still having to tilt my head down, and she also said, these are ONLY good for distance – for driving and TV and stuff. That sounded like a plan. I wore them as I walked back to Gelson’s, and again, if I kept my head tilted down things were pretty good. I got a half rack of ribs for food and a small cube steak for later. The calorie count for both was under 800, probably closer to 700 as their wasn’t all that much meat on the ribs and I don’t eat the bones. The cube steak was very light in calories – about 295. Later, I had some strawberries with a little whipped cream (only ten calories per squirt) – that was an excellent little treat and clearly I did not exceed 1000 calories for the fourth day in a row. Once in the car, I put on the new glasses again and I have to say that once my eyeballs adjusted to them, I could pretty much look straight ahead and the double image was basically corrected, with only a hint at very bottom of the glasses, which didn’t bother me at all. It was so nice not to see double stop lights or ghost images of cars to my right. So, I’ll now where them for driving and other distance things and we’ll see if we even need to make the slight adjustment to the tilted down view, which is a bit better. If we get them perfect, then I’ll have them do my sunglasses, but for the readers, I think those will suffice because if I tilt my head down a bit at the computer, that’s fine.

I came home, ate the ribs, which were excellent, but not that filling, and I had an apple afterwards. Then I did stuff on the computer, then went to the mail place to pick up a couple of envelopes, after which I came right back home. I watched some YouTube videos – some musical things and some irritating videos and then I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched a motion picture with the new glasses. I did have to tilt the head down quite a bit and I never got it perfect, but I think it’s because the TV isn’t really that far from the couch. We’ll see if my eyeballs get used to it or not. The motion picture was entitled Dream Scenario, a weird movie starring Nicolas Cage as a mild-mannered professor who starts showing up in people’s dreams all over the country. I suppose it’s a satire on amateur celebrity and how fast that can turn toxic, and Cage is very funny at times, but there’s something about its tone that isn’t comic at all. I enjoyed it mostly because it’s one of Cage’s best performances.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, there’s a UPS package coming, which will be the softcover and I’ll go pick that up. I haven’t decided on food yet – could be another hot dog day or better yet maybe a salad day. If I do end up doing hot dogs, then I’ll have an artichoke later in the day. I’ll pray for a hugely needed modern major miracle, and then I can watch, listen, and relax. Haven’t heard anything definitive about the Darling Daughter visit yet but I hope it happens.

The next few days are unknown because it will depend on if the Darling Daughter comes to visit.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, pick up the softcover, eat, pray for a hugely needed modern major miracle, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Nicolas Cage movies and performances? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have the new glasses and hoping my eyeballs get completely used to them, but if not, we’ll just do the little adjustment.
