THE DOCUMENTARY “STYLE”

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and I shall have to be up early and out the door early and breakfasting somewhere early and doing some errands and whatnot early, early being the operative word. And so, to the soothing sounds of Paul Desmond I’ll mention the documentary I watched last evening, entitled Spacey: Unmasked on Max. It features interviews with ten men and their Spacey stories, the earliest dating back to high school. Let me cut to the most obvious chase first – Spacey was brought to trial twice and found innocent at both trials. He was also sued by the House of Cards production company and while his conduct on the set was apparently no secret it must also be said that in their allegations nothing he was being accused of rose to criminal activity. Where I have a real issue with these kinds of things is that they did just what the Mia Farrow/Woody Allen documentary did – gave the person being accused a week to respond, after the show had already been edited, if I’m understanding things correctly. He has since responded and while he doesn’t deny certain things happening and regrets his behavior, he does deny the way those things are presented in this clearly one-sided two-episode thing. Whatever one chooses to believe about Spacey, it is beyond reprehensible to give someone a week to respond, at least it is in my opinion. Then there’s the “director” who clearly has watched every other terrible documentary on Netflix and Max because she uses the same exact interview BS they all do. The subject sits in a chair. We hear the person talking on the soundtrack while they sit there not saying anything. Why? And they do that for every interview and throughout the interview. What kind of “style” is that other than stupid? I honestly don’t get it. What are they trying to achieve? What’s the point? We’re watching an interview with someone speaking, it cuts to a different angle while their voice continues speaking and they sit there not talking. If the interview is interesting, Lady Director, just shoot the damn thing and show the damn thing without aping all the other stupid idiots who use that “style”. I find it absolutely infuriating, in case you haven’t gotten MY point. Did he do all the salacious things the ten are alleging? I have no idea since I wasn’t there. I just don’t like one-sided stories. I understand if one party declines to be interviewed or declines to respond. But that wasn’t the case here or with the Woody Allen thing. Anyway, if you’re interested in this sort of thing, you might give it a whirl – but I’ve pretty much had it with this “style” and the one-sided approach. The Paul Simon documentary is so much better in every way.

Prior to that, I know I was watching something, but I can’t remember what it might have been. Earlier, I got almost eight hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, never got the phone call from the insurance expert, so I’ll have to call him today, had Popeye’s for food, didn’t finish the commentary, so that will happen today, and then I had my viewing.

Today, I’ll be up by eight and out the door by eight-thirty and I’ll go breakfast somewhere, then do some errands and whatnot, then come home. I’ll finish the commentary, do whatever needs doing, I have a few things here to snack on later, and then at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is getting ready for the two Kritzerland rehearsals on Friday and Sunday, the stumble-through on Tuesday, and then sound check and show on Wednesday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eight and out the door by eight-thirty, breakfast, do errands and whatnot, come home, finish the commentary, do whatever needs doing, snack, and then watch, listen, and relax. What do you think of these types of documentaries and their “style” and manipulative interviews and footage? Which do you think did it right? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping to never see that documentary “style” again.
