FIEDLER ON THE ROOF

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon, although hopefully not as soon as she’s been doing recently. Right now, at this very moment, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Arthur Fiedler in monophonic sound do suites from Frank Loesser shows and films. These are wonderful suites – currently playing is Guys and Dolls. But why isn’t this wonderful album on CD and in Living Stereo? Why hasn’t Sony done an Arthur Fiedler box set – wouldn’t that be wonderful. They could call it Fiedler on the Roof. Both copies that one can grab from the Internet are in monophonic sound. I did manage to watch half a movie, the Eyetalian giallo The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Even though it wasn’t the first of that breed, it WAS the first to be an international hit and it started a whole trend just like the Eyetalian westerns that followed the Leone westerns. It’s a stylish but rather silly movie, with a good Ennio Morricone score. The streaming version was the English dub, which is fine for the two leads, American and English, but horrible for all the other voices. The Eyetalian dub is much better. I prefer the follow-up Dario Argento movie, Cat O’ Nine Tails, starring James Franciscus, Karl Malden, and Catherine Spaak. I’ll have to pull that one out and watch it again. Anyway, about an hour into Bird I dozed off for the film’s final forty-five minutes. Earlier, I’d gotten about five hours of sleep, I think, I got one onion bagel and more cream cheese from Western bagel because apparently over the past year I’ve spent a hundred bucks there so I got a ten-dollar off thing. I had one lox and bagel sandwich, and later I had two tacos from the local Mexican jernt I like. I had two long telephonic conversations with David Wechter, did some writing, chose songs but still have quite a few to go, finally heard from someone I’ve been trying to get hold of so hopefully that will result in something fun, and I went to the mail place to pick up a little package, after which I came right home. I had an odd text volley later in the evening, one annoying text earlier in the day garnered no response, and I think that was about it.

Today, I’ll be up by eight at the latest and out the door by eight-thirty whilst she of the Evil Eye does her thing. I’ll breakfast somewhere fun, do an errand or three, and then come home. Once home, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully finish choosing the songs, if Doug gets the flyer done, I’ll announce the show, I’ll have some telephonic conversations, and then at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, with a couple of meetings and meals and doing and going and going and doing. Not sure what the weekend will bring, but hopefully lots of good and positive things.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eight at the latest, out the door by eight-thirty, breakfast, do an errand or three, do whatever needs doing, choose more songs, hopefully announce the show, have a snack, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: When you were younger, did you have Arthur Fiedler LPs and did you watch him on TV with the Boston Pops? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, liking the idea of a box set entitled Fiedler on the Roof.
