FIGHTING VAINLY THE OLD ENNUI TO MAKE ROOM FOR SOME NEW ENNUI

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, fighting vainly the old ennui. In fact, I don’t mean to be ageist about the old ennui. After all, I’m an old Jew. Maybe the old ennui is still sprightly and gay as a stick. In any case, I am sitting here like so much fish fighting vainly either the old or young or in-between ennui. I wonder if Jean Anouilh ever fought the old ennui and if he did, who won? What the HELL am I talking about? Once again, it is late so I must write these here notes in a hurry and once again I am listening to the music of Richard Arnell, and I don’t care how knows it. And earlier I did manage to watch the third The Omen film, The Final Conflict. I’ll say this much – it’s better directed than the second film, but is much worse than the second film, which I would not have thought possible. It is devoid of suspense, the plot is beyond ridiculous, it features a lackluster cast of players, and while Jerry Goldsmith works overtime to try and perk it all up (some think this is Goldsmith’s finest score, but I’m not one of them – the first film’s score is still the best of the three. Perhaps as a listening experience it’s great – I wouldn’t know since I haven’t listened to it in a ‘coon’s age, but there’s no making a rancid turkey anything other than a rancid turkey. They must have paid Richard Donner a ton of dough so they could put his name on the film as executive producer to make it seem like he’s part of this mess, but I’d guess he had zero to do with it. I was almost going to watch the fourth film until I found out it was a TV movie. No thank you. I did get eight hours of needed sleep, got up, answered a slew of e-mails, got the ticketing thing all fixed and alerted the cast’s families that they could book their seats, then I decided to have fried catfish from the local jernt again – this time I got both filets and for the two sides I got two helpings of the lobster mac-and-cheese. And tartar sauce, as requested. But I now have to give ye olde catfishe a monthly break before having it again. Even catfished need an occasional break from being eaten. I did some work on the computer, I chose no songs, I watched a few irritating videos, after the movie I thought about getting something small to eat but didn’t – I’m now wishing I had. And maybe I just will, just because I’m fighting vainly the older than springtime ennui. Okay, I ordered a little something, which I hope I don’t regret, but one cannot have regrets, can one? One can only do one’s best and keep moving forward. Of course, after I eat what I ordered the big question will be CAN I move forward or move at all? We shall see, oh, yes, we shall see. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll have an unmitigated ME day. I’ll definitely do a Gelson’s run – thinking of making faux chicken stroganoff, or perhaps their ribs, or perhaps a couple of turkey sandwiches. We’ll see how I’m feeling and what will tickle the taste buds. I’ll eat, I’ll be lazy, and I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I begin choosing songs for the show in earnest – I do have four already chosen, but I’ve got to figure out the others pronto, get the sheet music together, and send to the performers so they’ll have a solid month to learn their stuff. I have some writing to do, and we’ll try to announce the next Kritzerland show so the public can then order their seats. The rest of the week is more of the same, with some meetings and meals thrown in for good measure.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, have a ME day, do a quick Gelson’s run, eat, be lazy, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall continue fighting vainly the old ennui so I can have some brand new ennui.
