THE NICELY NICE DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much Mozartian fish, listening Louis Lane do Mozart’s Divertimento No. 17. It’s very Mozartian and sounds like Mozart, which is good since he wrote it. Critic David Hurwitz reviewed the box set on the Tube of You, talks about its contents and is very favorable to it and Louis Lane and especially the Cleveland Orchestra. He talks about everything – contents, Lane himself, the band but never once mentions, you know, the SOUND and remastering, which is kind of his JOB, if you ask me. Clearly, he hadn’t listened to a single disc, but in his quest to be first on the block (or YouTube) he just reviews its contents. I’m hoping Sony gets back to me about discs nine and ten being mono, at least to my ears they are. If you want to chime in, the entire Rhapsody album in this new mastering is on YouTube – take a listen and you’ll hear there is not an iota of stereo separation, the strings are all in the center and so are all the other instruments. Anyway, after the Mozartian Mozart is done, there are only two more CDs left, but I’ll go back and listen to three or four albums again, and I don’t care who knows it. I didn’t really watch a motion picture earlier, but I did watch about forty minutes of Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Kipps, the musical, a much rewritten (badly) “adaptation” of Half a Sixpence. Many new songs not by David Heneker and quite a bit of the score missing. Terrible choreography and staging. Just watch Money to Burn and then watch the number as choreographed by Onna White on Broadway (on YouTube) and you’ll see exactly what I mean. And since when did the Brits begin behaving like whooping and hollering American audiences? Horrible. This divertimento is diverting, all right. What else did I watch? Some irritating YouTube videos for sure.

As to yesterday, it was a much nicer day than the previous weirdly weird day. I got nine count them nine hours of really good sleep with some wacky dreams. Once up, I was in the process of answering e-mails when I got a text from David Wechter. Turns out, there was a conference call we were not told about in advance, and David tried to have me join the call, but my phone was on silent because I keep it on silent until I get up – I just forgot to flip the damn switch. So, the conference call was rescheduled for four. So, I moseyed on over to the mail place and picked up a small package but no mail even though I know there’s a The Faculty residual that should be here because David got his. Hopefully, it arrived yesterday after I was there or will arrive today. It’s not huge, but it will pay for a weeks’ worth of meals, so that’s nice. After that, I went to the Studio City Gelson’s and got a cube steak (only about three hundred calories), a small bit of hatch chili mac and cheese, and for later some vegetable sushi. I came home and made the cube steak and ate it – very good, as was the mac and cheese.

Then I went in the book room and reorganized the shelves, making room for books that were just on top of other books – everything’s now where it should be and looks nicer. At four, we had our conference call, and I was pleased that it was short and sweet and positive. I had a nice telephonic conversation with dear reader Jeanne, as I like to hear the daily updates on the hunt for a condo. Then I had the cucumber sushi thing and that was fine. Then I watched whatever I watched, and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll check to see if the residual showed up and if so I’ll go retrieve it and deposit it, I’ll eat something that tickles my fancy, at three I have a phone meeting that should last about thirty minutes, if that, then I will definitely watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I’ll just putter around the home environment until it’s time to be on my way to the birthday dinner at a nearby restaurant. That should be fun and I’m pretty sure they have a good Louis there, which is what I’ll have if I’m remembering correctly. Then this coming week is busy and I’ll have a work session with the musical director of the Kritzerland show, and there’ll be a few meetings and meals, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, check with the mail place and go there if there’s something to retrieve, eat, have a phone meeting, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What do you think about this habit of rewriting books of musicals or adding songs to established musicals by other songwriters? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that we had a nicely nice day for a change. More, please.
