THAT’S A GOOD THING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to the Peter Chase soundtrack to the 1996 motion picture entitled L’Appartement (The Apartment) – a wonderful score, somewhat Herrmannesque, Goldsmithesque and that’s a good thing. Not a copy, just a similar sound world. I’ll talk more about it in a moment. But let me begin by saying that we had us another modern major miracle yesterday and that’s a good thing. We still need two or three more so keep those excellent vibes and xylophones coming. Actually, it was a fine day, yesterday was, and that’s a good thing. I was up at eight and out the door by eight-forty, leaving she of the Evil Eye to her own devices. I joined Robert Yacko at our breakfast jernt, only to find they were closed for cleaning. Go know. So, I drove us to nearby Paty’s and we had breakfast there. I had my usual omelet with bacon, cheese, and scallions and it was very good. Robert had a scramble of some sort. We had fun yakking. After that, I went to Macy’s to check out socks, but I have to say their selection wasn’t great and they were very expensive. I’ll either wait for the next sale or I’ll check out socks on Amazon. Then I came home and chose a few more songs, did some things that needed doing on the computer, then in the later afternoon I ordered a sub from the real sub place, Santoro’s. It arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was just as good as it was the first time around. Then I watched some irritating YouTube videos, but not TOO many, and that’s a good thing. After all that, I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled L’Appartement (The Apartment), a new release from Kino. I’ve written about this movie every time I’ve watched it and that’s more than a few times. I was very taken with it the first time and then it became an addiction. It’s a beautifully directed romantic thriller by its writer, Gilles Mimouni. It’s endlessly twisty and endlessly clever and the three central performances could not be better – Vincent Cassel, Monica Belluci, and especially Romane Bohringer. The various DVD releases (I think I own three) were terrible – they looked like bad video or VHS. Happily, this new Blu-ray sports an excellent transfer, which finally allows us to see the beautiful photography and lighting. I’m hoping lots of people discover it now. It was, of course, remade into a horrible American version called Wicker Park by people who apparently hadn’t a clew as to why the original works so well. This movie (it’s being sold as The Apartment, so make sure you’re not getting the Billy Wilder movie) comes highly recommended by the likes of me. And boy, is Peter Chase’s score wonderful.

After the movie, I had a telephonic conversation and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up at nine and will have a brief visit with someone from the UK who’s coming by to pick up a couple of CDs. Then the rest of the day will be spent finishing choosing the songs, casting our final gal, getting the flyer done, and getting the show information to the club so they can put tickets on sale, I’ll figure out the food situation and get whatever sounds good, I need more soda pop so I’ll see where it’s on sale, then I have to make a small decision on which day to do something that needs doing – probably tomorrow or Friday, maybe Monday – then at some point I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, the newly beautified Benjamin Kritzer books should arrive and we’ll get those right out to those who bought them, and then I’m going to start planning a series of CD releases – we haven’t announced a new release since last December.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at nine, have a brief encounter, choose songs, cast our final gal, get the flyer done, get the show info to the club and as soon as they go live with tickets I’ll announce it on Facebook and here, I’ll eat, I’ll buy more soda pop, make a small decision about the optimal day to do something, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a very nice yesterday – and that’s a good thing.
