THE NEW, IMPROVED READERS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much Sunday night about to be Monday morning fish, listening to one of my all-time favorite albums, The Impressionists, conducted by one Bernard Herrmann, the album that really introduced me to Satie, Faure, and Honegger. I played the LP to death, over and over and over again. Amazingly, it has never once been released on CD, but there was a very high-quality reel-to-reel release, and I believe that’s what some nice soul uploaded to the Tube of You. Earlier, I watched about thirty minutes of a “new” Liam Neeson movie called The Marksman. It was on YouTube and dated 2024. Well, no, it’s 2021 and I’d seen it a couple of years ago, a terrible movie with no cliché left unturned. We’ve got your lone wolf with recently deceased wife, lone wolf about to have his house repossessed by the bank. Loyal and trusty dog, nasty drug cartel types, you name it, it’s here. I shut it off and watched some irritating YouTube videos, which were a lot more entertaining than The Marksman. Otherwise, yesterday was kind of a ME day. I got about seven hours of good sleep, got up, answered e-mails, got dressed, and then moseyed on over to the Studio City CVS which, unlike my branch here in the Oaks of Sherman, always has everything I need in plentiful supply, whereas my branch never does. It’s where I’d bought my original pair of reading glasses two years ago and I wanted similar shape and frames. Well, they had tons of every shape and size and strength. I found the ones I wanted instantly, decided on the 1.2 strength, which is .2 stronger than the last pair, and they were perfect for my eyeballs. They’re Foster Grants, have something called Anti-Fog and Blue Light lenses that apparently make computer viewing easier on the eyeballs. They were thirty-two bucks, so with my two coupons totaling fifteen dollars, with tax it was twenty-four bucks, a pretty good deal and pretty much what I paid two years ago. I may go back there at some point this week and get another pair as backup. And I think I’ll leave the Studio City CVS a stellar review while I’m at it. Then I came home and ordered my grilled chicken pasta with broccoli, red onions, and cashews from Stanley’s. It arrived fifteen minutes later and was really good – hadn’t had it in about four or five months. After that, as a little palette cleanser, I had some cherry chocolate chip ice cream, a perfect closer. Then I was suddenly tired, so I plopped down on the bed and slept another hour. Once up again, I did a few things on the computer, rested, did my bit of viewing, and then listened to music – now playing, Bernard Herrmann’s masterpiece of film scoring, North by Northwest. A perfect score for a perfect film. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven at the latest, I’ll shave and shower, do whatever needs doing and then at two we begin part one of our first Kritzerland rehearsal, which I’m very much looking forward to. That should be over by four, I think, at which point I’ll order some food from somewhere, I’ll eat said food when it arrives, I’ll make a nice post about the rehearsal, then at some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, she of the Evil Eye comes, I have a lunch at noon-thirty not too far from the home environment, then I hurry back home and we have part two of our first rehearsal from four to seven-thirty – looking forward to that, too. Wednesday, I’ll catch up on stuff, Thursday is our second rehearsal, a long one from two to seven-thirty, Friday is another catch-up day, Saturday is our stumble-through at two, and then it’s sound check and show on Sunday. Whew!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven at the latest, shave and shower, do whatever needs doing, have part one of a rehearsal, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Favorite film scores of one Bernard Herrmann. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have found excellent new readers.
