THE OTHER WILDER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, feeling a bit wild due to listening to the delightful music of one Alec Wilder, surely an underrated composer if ever there was one, and no relation to the other Wilder, namely Billy. Currently playing is his soundtrack to The Sand Castle. Maybe I’ll put out his piano concerto with a couple of other rare concertos by similar composers. Wilder has a wonderful sense of melody (he wrote the classic song, I’ll Be Around) and you should partake of his music, much of which is available on the Tube of You. Earlier, I did watch yet another new movie released just a few weeks ago, direct to streaming entitled Subservience, a bad title for an even worse movie. It so wants to be M3GAN and so isn’t, even though its leading lady is Megan Fox, playing a M3GAN-like robot for the whole family, except unlike M3GAN, this one’s rather sexy. In any case, it’s just typical screenwriting 101 without one single surprising thing, accompanied by awful dialogue and not even a trace of tongue in cheek. The male lead is written so poorly – a drunk, an easy catch for the robot – and the “actor” who plays him, an Eyetalian who sounds nothing like an Eyetalian, and is one of those model-types, bearded, heavily tattooed, sculpted body, ever out of place hair placed carefully and perfectly to look out of place – you know what I’m talking about. Turns out that’s exactly what he is – a model – and it also turns out all those grotesque tattoos that cover most of him are his own. The director does the usual camera moving on almost ever shot, and usually for no reason at all, and the icing on this failed cake is the score, surely one of the worst scores ever – totally droning from frame one to frame last. It’s so tiresome. Highly NOT recommended by the likes of me.

Otherwise, yesterday was certainly a Monday. I got very little sleep – don’t know why, really. Maybe three- or four-hours tops. I answered e-mail, then drove over the hill to pick up something, after which I stopped at Astro Burger, favorite haunt of one Adriana Hofstetter. I snagged a booth just in the nick of time. I ordered my usual bacon cheeseburger and zucchini fries. The burger wasn’t as good as it usually is, mostly due to forgetting the onions and the lettuce turning brown and wilted. I really should have sent it back. The zucchini fries were great, as always. After that, I came right home. I was too zonked to even attempt to work at the piano. Instead, I sat on my couch like so much fish and dozed off for a couple of hours. That didn’t really help. I had a telephonic call, and then I watched the movie. After that, I got a small Caesar and one catfish filet delivered from the jernt where I’d gotten the small Caesar a few days ago. The actual fish was fine – the breading had some weird aftertaste that I didn’t really care for, but the tartar sauce was very good. Salad was fine. Then Doug Haverty called and the Group Rep season was announced, so here’s his poster design for your mental delectation.

That was about it, and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll check in with the mail place, I’ll try to finish the little project, but that may take another day or two, I’ll eat, then at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, I’ll attempt to find a set designer for Drat! The Cat!, I’ll have some meetings and meals, and do whatever needs doing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, check in with the mail place, try to finish the little project or at least get close, I’ll eat, then I can watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite movies that feature robots – old movies and new movies. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be reacquainting myself with the music of Mr. Alec Wilder, the other Wilder.
