CELEBRATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE SMOKEHOUSE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, you’ll be happy to know that Mike Mazurki did not make a reappearance in my dreams, none of which I remember, save for the fact Mike Mazurki did not reappear. As I write these here notes, I am listening to one of my all-time favorite movie theme albums by Don Costa, the only LP to have Andre Previn’s theme from Long Day’s Journey into Night, although Mr. Previn had a release of the theme on 45. It’s a delightfully delightful album in great stereophonic sound. Once again, I watched no motion pictures because there simply wasn’t time to do so. I don’t really know WHY there was no time to do so, other than I had some stuff that needed doing, some texts to respond to, some e-mail to answer, and a little work on the computer. But let me go back in time to when I awoke yesterday after finally getting eight hours of sleep. I got up at noon o’clock, answered e-mails, and then did a little experiment at the piano, recording piano tracks for the four songs, just to see if it might work for me to put those on my big boy computer and then record me singing to the tracks, but frankly the acoustic is quite flat where the computer is, and it just sounds weird. Nor was I happy with any of the tracks, so even if I go that route, I’ll be re-recording them. But I think I may just try a set where I sing and play the four songs and see if I can get a version I like – the acoustic in the living room is fantastic – all the Kritzerland singers love singing in there. That ate up a lot of the day, and then I shaved and showered so that I might actually look like an actual human being. Then I moseyed on over to The Smokehouse restaurant. They’re currently celebrating their anniversary, having opened in October 1946. This they do every year, and during the month of October they have a special 1946 menu, where everything costs $19.46. I met a friend there. Friend ordered the brochette of beef, and I ordered the shrimp louis and a cup of the clam chowder. Of course, a half-order of the garlic cheese bread was eaten. Clam chowder was great, garlic cheese bread was great, shrimp louis was lusciously luscious, and my friend loved the brochette. Tales were told, laughs were had, and a fine time was had by all. Waiter was Marco, who’s been my waiter the last few times I’ve been there, so he knew to keep the dressing coming and the Diet Coke coming. I really needed a nice meal out and this did the trick. Afterward, I came home, first stopping at Rite Aid, really to buy some Ricola, which they were out of. I honestly don’t know how they stay open – half the shelves there are empty as can be. Instead of Ricola I got some cherry chocolate chip ice cream for a sweet, then came home. I had a bit of the cherry chip ice cream – very good – then I watched a few irritating YouTube videos, arranged a breakfast meet-up for this morning, so I can be absent for she of the Evil Eye. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up by eight, she of the Evil Eye will arrive around eight-thirty, then I’ll go have a light breakfast. Once that’s done, I’ll do a few errands and whatnot, come home, try a piano/vocal pass on a couple of songs and see how I do, have some telephonic calls, pray for a modern major miracle, and then at some point, watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I have a lunch meeting – I have to choose the venue, so I’m thinking about that very thing, then it’s more of the same, same for Thursday and Friday – we’ll see what’s up on the weekend. The set designer I’d gone to, as expected, said she just couldn’t take it on right now. Disappointing, but the search continues.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eight and out the door by eight-thirty, have a light breakfast, do errands and whatnot, come home, work at the piano and decide which way I’ll record the songs, have some telephonic calls, pray for a modern major miracle, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite kinds of ice cream, especially more exotic flavors – I accidentally typed erotic flavors, but that’s for another day. That reminds me of the tale of The Randy Vicar and the Ice Cream Cone. That one’s a corker. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have finally had a nice meal out to celebrate the anniversary of The Smokehouse.
