IN THE STILL OF THE STILL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m still listening to the movie music of Ernest Gold and it’s still lovelier than lovely. I am still sitting here like so much fish. I am still an about to be older Jew. I am still a curmudgeon. I still have too much phlegm. I am still crazy after all these years. I am still in need of a hefty modern major miracle. I am still writing these here notes in the still of the night. Has anyone noticed there’s a whole mess o’ stills going on? That is a lot of stills – still, there may be more to come. Remember, still waters run deep, and deep waters run still. Wait – all of a sudden, my heart stood still. It’s fine now. Still, did you know that behind the hill there’s a busy little still? Well, let’s be really still and maybe we can move on to something else. For example, I watched a motion picture last night – one I still always enjoy watching – Capricorn One. I first saw it at a sneak preview at the Village Theater in 70mm and stereo. The audience went wild and everyone there thought it was going to be a HUGE smash. It wasn’t – very odd. It’s very well cast, it’s fun, exciting, well-directed and has a great Jerry Goldsmith score to boot. Anyway, it was very enjoyable all over again. Just to prove that my memory is infallible, Friday, April 18, 1976, sneak preview at the Village (and yes, I was there for The Fury beforehand).

Isn’t that fun? The movie would open on June 2 at the Bruin. It had one additional sneak at the National in mid-May. Prior to the motion picture, I’d gotten eight hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, ordered my pasta and meatball and a small Caesar from Maria’s Kitchen – that arrived and was excellent. Then I was feeling my oats, so I recorded a couple of piano tracks, got them on the computer, and tried recording the vocal over them – didn’t care for the result – vocal too hot, piano to low and dull sounding. So, I recorded all four songs again and I think two of them are good enough to keep. I’ll try to get the other two today and be done with it. That took a couple of hours and I was pretty much all in after that, so I just relaxed and did some stuff on the computer. Oh, and I did do some writing before going to bed – another three pages and boy were they fun to write, I must say and have said. Then I watched the movie, then needed a snack so I ordered two a la carte tacos from Don Cuco. They were really good and really hit the spot after which the spot hit them right back. Then I put on some music and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, when I’m feeling my oats I’ll try to record the two songs again and hope for the best, I’ll eat something fun somewhere, and then my plan was to go see the Group Rep show – just the first act – to see two actors who weren’t on the night I was there, so I can see if they’re right for Drat! The Cat! However, last night’s show was cancelled because the pianist was in the hospital. So, Doug will call to let me know if he’s back or not. If not, I’ll just stay home and do stuff here. At some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I thankfully remembered that I’m going to see West Side Story in 70mm – that should be fun – and I’ll probably get food while I’m in that neighborhood. Then this week is very busy with all manner of things, all of which I must do.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, try to record two more songs, maybe first act the play at the Group Rep if the show is going on, and then I can watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite motion pictures starring Capricorn One’s Elliot Gould? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, knowing that I used the word still more times than any other site on all the Internet.
